It was Hedy's turn to look hurt. "What do you

mean?" she asked, walking to the edge of the stage,

hands on her hips.

"It was slick," Bax said.

"Slick? If you mean professional, I'll take it as a

compliment," Hedy said, staring straight at Rena as

she said it.

"I didn't say 'professional.' I said 'slick,'" Bax

insisted. "I heard words, I saw emotion. But I didn't

see them come together in a character."

"Well, let's run through it again," Hedy said, frowning.

"I'm ready to go back," Rena interrupted.

Bax gave her a pleased smile and gestured with the

clipboard for her to resume her place onstage.

"Ba-ax—" Hedy pleaded.

Bax ignored her.

"Bax, my mother has certain expectations, and—

"Thanks for stepping in," Bax told Hedy coldly.

"It's very comforting to know that you're so ready to

take over the role should anything happen to Rena."

"But, Bax—"

"Please take your seat, Hedy. We'll rehearse your

scene in a little while."

Hedy threw up her hands and stalked off the stage.

She stepped past Rena without saying anything. Rena

climbed the steps onto the stage.

"Welcome back," Chip said, shaking hands. "Are

we friends again?"

"Friends." Rena smiled.

"Let's try the stabbing scene again," Bax called up

to them.

"Does she have to stab me? Couldn't we kiss and

make up instead?" Chip pleaded half-seriously.
