CONNOR

The drive to Georgia was mostly silent. I didn’t try to force small talk between Jeanie or the young ones. I was still a stranger to them and had no desire to make them more uncomfortable.

Whenever Jeanie requested stopping for bathroom breaks or food, I agreed without question. It was only on the last hour to the FDR center she started talking to me unprompted.

“How did you meet Mel?” she began.

My knuckles whitened on the steering wheel as my hands clenched at the memory. I never imagined I would think of Syko again.

“A guy was trying to take advantage of her,” I answered. “It was her first time onstage at a carnival, which made it even worse. Poor thing was like a deer in headlights up there. At her first chance, she bolted.”

“And let me guess. You were her knight in shining armor,” Jeanie remarked sarcastically.

“Not exactly,” I laughed. “You’ll see I’m not that type at all. But she slipped and fell in the mud, then threw up all over herself. Don’t let her know I told you that.”

“Wow. That must’ve been sexy.”

“Love at first sight,” I cracked. “But no, actually, I did feel bad. So I gave her water and let her use my trailer to shower in, while I stayed far away. I tried to keep staying far away, but she never left me alone.”

“So when did y’all fall in love?”

“Hm, for me?” I took a moment to think about when exactly it happened. It was crystal clear to me, but I felt a little unsure about spilling that to Jeanie.

“I guess it was when I had a bad PTSD episode.” Fuck it, why not? She was Mel’s family, and would figure it out when she saw the FDR center anyway. “Mine gets triggered by noises like gunshots or fireworks sometimes. Mel stayed with me the whole time and just calmed me down. No one had really done that for me before, so that was when I knew she was special.”

“PTSD?” Jeanie asked.

I nodded and reached down to lift up my pant leg.

“Holy shit,” she breathed.

“It’s not my place to tell you what to do with your life, but I don’t recommend joining the military,” I snorted. “It worked out alright for me, but I wouldn’t wish the hell I went through on anybody else.”

Except maybe Lhozen.

My heart tightened uncomfortably in my chest. Lord almighty, please keep my babe and those three knuckleheads safe. I wished more than anything I could hear her voice in my head like they could. Only two days away from her and I was already fighting every instinct to turn this bitch around and run to be at her side.

Maybe Jeanie was onto something and I was more of a knight in shining armor than I cared to admit. Or maybe falling in love with Mel made me that way.

“So Mel’s a circus performer or whatever now?” Jeanie said. “That’s why she couldn’t come get us herself?”

“She’s a ringmistress, yes,” I said evenly. “But that’s not why she couldn’t come.
