Chapter Nineteen

“Pepper, I have lots to explain,” Corbin says when we walk into the suite. Again, he’s using that sad voice.

I refuse to look at him. “Is it okay if I sleep? I don’t feel right,” I mumble. It’s not even seven, and my head is throbbing. It’s been a hell of a day.

“Okay, little thief, we’ll talk about this later.” Corbin shows me into one of the bedrooms. It has an on-suite. “If you need me, my room is the one opposite. There are some clean clothes on the bed and shower stuff in the bathroom so you can freshen up. If you get hungry or thirsty later, help yourself to whatever is in the kitchen. Also, Pepper, I’m a light sleeper, so don’t try to sneak out. It won’t end well for you. We leave early tomorrow.”

I nod, close the door in his face, grab the clean clothes off the bed, and head into the bathroom. I don’t want to talk to him and don’t care if it makes him uncomfortable. I don’t like him very much right now. I use the toilet and wash my hands and face. Feeling broken and lost, I lean against the sink.

I wish we were going back home. I should have said I had to pick up the message tonight. I don’t like all this delay while Tilly’s waiting for help to arrive. I hope Corbin’s friend John finds her safe and sound and that the slaver elves had lied.

I need to set the tiger on the elves, get these runes off, and find somewhere to hide out until Death gets bored with looking for me. I grip the sink. I can’t even look in the mirror. The small bathroom is teaming with balls of light—no, get it right, souls.

The bathroom is teaming with souls. We are all squished in here together, and if I even wanted a shower, it would make me feel icky getting into the shower with them. I need to get this mess fixed.

What has my life become? I wonder if the elves know what I really am or if they think they are getting the mythical messenger. My lips twitch. Heck, they’re in for a shock. I’m a reaper. Surprise! What did the Grim Reaper have in the stories? My fingers strum on the cold marble as I think. A scythe, a magical weapon to poke at them. Yeah, I’d like one of those please.

There is a pop, and I see black fur. Suddenly it’s no longer just me and the souls in the bathroom. I let out a squeak of fright, my legs tangle, and I go down, ending up in the bathtub with a bang. The hotel’s mini shampoos follow, boinking me on the head as I lie there dazed.

“Eurus!” I hunch and cover my mouth. Oh no, did Corbin hear that racket? When nothing happens. I lean forward, peeking over the rim of the tub. “What are you doing here?” I whisper. I can’t quite believe Eurus came to find me.
