Chapter 19

“Absolutely appalling behavior,” Petunia said, glaring at them from beneath her brows. “You need to be ashamed. Both of you.”

The Spectral Senate consisted of seven tenured spirits who had demonstrated superior magical skills during their time in the spiritual realm. Reva had already chatted with a handful of them before, such as Wilson, who tidied up his appearance every chance he got, and Deborah, who seemed displeased with Reva’s appearance within their chambers.

A mausoleum in the center of The Yews housed the senate's chambers. Petunia, Reva, and Cyrus entered the small marble building and descended a few feet into the earth. Then a staircase led them to wooden double doors that opened gradually when they neared.

They stepped into a surprisingly large, circular room and encountered a long, elevated, curved desk that took up the far side of the chamber.

With one wave of the hand, Petunia lit the area by igniting torches dotted along the walls. Pillars connected the black marble floor to the ceiling of the same material. When Reva glanced up, she could see her reflection staring down at her.

Behind the elevated desk sat all of the current Spectral Senate members, including the ones that Reva had never interacted with before.

Had they all just arrived, or had they been sitting here in the dark?

The de facto leader of the council sat at the center, with three members flanking him on either side. As Reva and Cyrus stood behind her like awkward, truant children, Petunia recounted to the council how she saw Cyrus kiss Reva in the middle of The Yews. Wilson and another council member named Spyro sniggered under their hands. Meanwhile, the head of the council slammed his gavel against the desk, without using his arms.

Magic is just part of their everyday lives, I guess.

“Enough nonsense,” he growled, and crossed his arms over his chest. Reva recognized him as Leondas Trentham. Sixty years spent in the spiritual realm, with no intention to pass on just yet. “Reva, is this true?”

“It is, Leondas, but I–”

“Please don’t blame her for what happened,” Cyrus interjected, stepping forward.

In an instant, all eyes of the council landed upon him, tinged with a mix of curiosity and disgust. Reva wondered at their individual reactions to this bombshell and knew they might not reflect Petunia’s attitude. She could be harsh. She was one of the stricter presences on the council, a no-nonsense spirit with a desire for peace, balance, and tranquility between spirits and humans.

Which, in her view, could not be possible if a spirit and a human’s relationship transitioned into romance.

“So, you initiated the contact, Cyrus?” Leondas leaned both elbows upon the desk, folding his hands together. “You kissed her?”

“I did.”

“Why?” Wilson scrunched up his face. “You know you’ll never be able to sustain a long-term relationship with her, right? So why are you trying so hard to convince yourself that you could?”

“It’s not easy for me to explain,” Cyrus replied, averting his gaze from the jeering smirk that flashed across the faces of Spyro and Daphne Wintkin, yet another spirit on the council.
