Twenty-One

They escaped just in time. Lucy heard the bedroom door creak open slowly just as they reached the edge of the roof. Reid crouched, lowering himself to the ground and dropping a few feet. He landed lightly and held his hands up for her to do the same but now was not the time to act like a regular girl.

It was only a matter of time before the person who had entered the room would notice the window was open. Seconds before they would look outside and see. She didn’t have the luxury to go slow, so she jumped.

When she landed, almost silently, she crouched down and pressed her back into the side of the garage next to Reid. He was looking at her with eyes that were finally recognising she was different. It wasn’t the look you gave someone you were potentially crushing on. It was, Lucy thought, something far more like how Bryony had looked at her.

There was no time to soften the blow.

She grabbed his hand and pulled him into the bushes next to the drive, pushing through the dry branches which scratched at her arms and face. She dragged him after her as she began to run down the street, feeling how much he was lagging behind despite knowing he could more than keep up.

Thankfully, whatever survival instincts he had kicked in and after a block of her literally dragging him behind her, he was running on his own.

Without a word being passed between them they sprinted, following the path they’d taken the day before only this time they didn’t laugh as they went. There was no playful chase, no smiles as they gasped for breath. They ran with purpose, letting their feet pound the ground hard until they collapsed in the hallway of the house.

Once inside, Lucy listened.

Her heart hammered in her chest as she followed her senses through the house and out into the garden where June and Mrs Dunlop were sat, the long afternoon shadows from the cacti creeping towards the house like fingers clawing.

“Lucy, wait—” Reid called, he followed close behind her as she stormed through the kitchen door but he didn’t dare touch her like he might have done before she’d jumped off a roof right in front of him.

“What’s wrong?” Mrs Dunlop asked with her usual calmness, but Lucy saw her eyes drift to Reid, where he hovered over her shoulder.

“It’s nothing, Lucy, come back inside.” His hand slid into hers, but she pulled away from him.

There wasn’t much the sisters could do about their inability to pass mental images to each other like when they were in their animal forms, but they still had their sister bond and June was always great at picking up on signals. Her eyes stared at where Reid’s hand had just been, where Lucy knew she had a smudge of Bryony’s blood. Her sister’s nostrils flared.

“You look upset, do you want to go inside and talk?” June stood up pulled Lucy into a hug.

“Yeah…If that’s OK?” Lucy looked at Mrs Dunlop with wide, apologetic eyes.
