Cillian

I cursed every God and fae I could think of as her head rolled to the side and she broke eye contact. I rushed out of the stairwell into the hallway, startling several workers. The fae stared at me like they had seen a ghost before running away.

“Rory!” I screamed into the air as I headed for the royal rooms down the hall. My brother would be waiting nearby. His game was not over, and I would not let him be the reason she died—I wouldn’t be the reason. My chest constricted with the thought and I strangled out a breath.

I tried to focus. I knew what Rory wanted and I would give it to him. Rory wanted me to participate in the trials. I would, in exchange for the antidote. Looking at the gray halls decorated with large arched double doors, I could remember why I left. This place stopped feeling like home a long time ago. My primal magic sat on my tongue, ready to act. I was already angry it had slipped out against Seanait, but I was also grateful. She held on as long as she could thanks to it.

My primal was powerful but if I said the wrong thing, missed telling one person the correct instructions, so much damage could be done, and my siblings were the best at manipulating. There were times I could recount where they found a guard I didn’t compel and used them to attack me. Each death was on my own hands, regardless of how much my mother claimed it was self-defense. At some point, it stopped being self-defense. At some point, I accepted being the Monster of Amanthia and let others face the consequences of my actions. I was still doing it.

Each of Seanait’s ragged breaths felt like an arrow shot into my heart. My bond ached, my heart pulsing with pain. I shouted for Rory again. My sibling’s bedroom doors opened. The royal chambers at the end of the hall opened as well. My mother walked from her room towards me. Her silver robe flowed behind her, reflecting light onto her glasslike wings. Her steps quickened as her eyes laid on the lifeless girl in my arms. She pushed her ashen hair over her shoulder and looked at me with her emerald eyes.

“Cillian, what happened?” she whispered, her voice severe. She reached me and gently placed her hand on Seanait’s forehead.

The heads of my siblings peeked from beyond their doors. Closest stood Darcy. She wore a long red form-fitting dress with her matching wings hugged tight to her body. Her blue eyes watched me as her lips curled upwards in amusement. She looked so much like her twin, Rory.

“You’re home,” she commented, ignoring Seanait.

“Rory!” I yelled again. His laughter filled the hall behind me. I turned and he smiled.

“Seems I finally found something you care about,” Rory chuckled.

“We do not involve humans in our ways,” our mother snapped.

“Well she isn’t just any human, is she?” he asked me, his grin growing.
