CATCHING THE KILLER

While Lam owned the photography equipment, he didn’t have access to a dark room. He met a man who worked at Kodak Express while attending a photography course and dropped by his store in July of 1982. Lam explained he was a part-time photographer for a funeral home, which meant he documented autopsies. He needed to develop several rolls of film and wanted to warn his acquaintance about the images he would see in the process.

The acquaintance didn’t question Lam’s story and developed the films himself. However, on August 10th, Lam wanted to enlarge several photos of Leung Wai-sum’s body. His acquaintance sent them to another Kodak Express store across the city. The technician processing the negatives was shocked when he saw the contents of the photos.

He told his manager that the roll of film contained close-ups of different body parts. Furthermore, the person in the photos had visible burn marks on his legs. They contacted the Kodak Express store that delivered the negatives and learned the photographer worked for a funeral home.

However, it was clear that the photos weren’t taken on an autopsy table but on a carpet inside someone’s home. The employees decided to call the police and report their discovery, and soon, local detectives were in the Kodak Store, inspecting the images. The forensic technician determined the person in the photos was dead for at least three hours and that the dismemberment was performed by someone who lacked medical knowledge.

As expected, they wanted to talk with the man who took the photos, but the clerk didn’t know his name or address. So, the police would wait for him to pick up the images at the Kodak Store.

In the afternoon of August 17th, Lam came in to get his photos and was arrested on the spot. During the interview at the police station, he claimed that his friend had taken the images and that he had no idea what was on the film. According to him, the friend was on a boat trip and was supposed to return to Hong Kong that day.

The investigators were almost certain 27-year-old Lam was lying, but they allowed him to go out and meet with the said friend. Several police officers followed him to the meeting place and weren’t surprised when no one showed up. It was clear that Lam was behind the murder of a then-nameless young woman.
