CULTURE SHOCK

Wherever you come from, Mauritius will offer something familiar, be it in the population make-up, food or people’s attitudes. However, it will never be the same as home. So you might not feel culture shock right from the beginning because you will be concentrating on the few familiar things and enjoying the novelty of the unfamiliar.

It might be a few months later that culture shock will kick in. It could be in the form of a general feeling of depression or homesickness, or in a feeling of frustration over the different way things work here. Whatever it is, the moment you do not feel comfortable or are irked by some niggling feeling, it is culture shock. The thing to avoid is repressing your feelings. It is perfectly all right to be irritated by the laid-back attitude of your colleagues or by the sound of Creole or French wherever you go.

However, do not go ranting and raving in front of your Mauritian friends. You might not find them understanding enough because the idea of culture shock is alien to them. They sincerely believe that their island is the best place to live on earth and would not understand why you are not enjoying yourself. Give them an idea that you are not quite used to living in Mauritius yet and take part in local activities. Do not shut yourself off from Mauritian society. Ease yourself into Mauritian living by visiting with friends or going to the beach. But always make time for yourself, both at home and in the office, when you can set things in perspective and be critical of certain attitudes and behaviour.
