Intel is positioned in the new 2013 list; however, they were already practising these initiatives under their CSR strategy in 2010 (Munro, 2013a, 2013b). As discussed previously, this is one of the many overlaps between CSR and CSV. The potential overlap between the two terms and the strengths and weaknesses of CSV are discussed further, later this chapter. Some of the case studies listed above are also discussed in more detail later this chapter followed by an examination of the key components of a successful model for CSV.

Before commencing a literature review of the academic literature, it is important to acknowledge that accurate CSV examples are described as the “simultaneous advancing of economic and social conditions” as described by Porter and Kramer (2011). It is also important to mention the three pillars. Porter and Kramer (2011) explain the CSV approach is not about sharing the value already created by firms nor is it a redistribution approach. Instead, it is about expanding the total pool of economic and social value through a three-pillar approach:
