The Yeti Meets the Modern World

In the 20th century, more and more people attempted to climb Mount Everest. The feat was not actually accomplished until May 29, 1953 when Sir Edmund Hillary and his guide Tenzing Norgay reached the summit.

I can't help but point out that until that day, and on many occasions after, there have been a lot of oxygen-starved adrenaline junkies wandering around up there on the mountain. Hallucinations are not out of the equation here.

Even Hillary said he saw prints up there on the high slopes, but later discounted any truth to the Yeti legend. Tensing Norgay believed in the Yeti because his father claimed to have seen the creature twice. Tensing reported looking at big footprints, but had no eyewitness experience himself.

Most of the Yeti accounts I’ve read are pretty much the same, inexplicable footprints. I was a little amused to see that Jimmy Stewart (yeah, that one, the actor) is supposed to have smuggled a Yeti hand out of India in 1959. The so-called Pangboche Hand is from a Buddhist monastery in Nepal.
