Ryan clutched the small bouquet of wild flowers, knowing it was a cheesy move. Yet he hadn’t been able to help himself from picking out the blooms that covered part of the backyard. He’d been out there, looking for visible signs of more traps. Midway through, he’d become terrified he’d accidentally step on one himself. After pausing to grab a few flowers, he’d found his way back into the house and showered before jumping into his car.

In his mind, there had been no conscious decision to check in on the wolf. He’d just done it, without thinking.

He ambled into the clinic’s foyer. It looked much different in the daylight. Several people worked behind the big counter, and he wondered if they were shifters like Lucas and Jakob.

“Hi,” he said, coming up to the window. “I’m here to see Jakob.”

The guy behind the counter sniffed a little, his eyes widening a bit. “I’m not sure I know who you mean.”

Ryan backpedaled a little, wondering if Jakob’s surgery had been a secret. Maybe the others didn’t know about Lucas and Jakob’s secret. “Maybe I got the wrong place,” he said, stepping back from the counter.

“He’s okay, Ty. Let him on back.”

Ryan turned his head and saw Lucas in the background. Ty hit a buzzer and nodded for Ryan to go through the door that had been open last night. Ryan walked through and searched for Lucas.

“What are you doing here?” Lucas asked before his stare went to the stupid bunch of flowers in Ryan’s hand. He lifted his stare to meet Ryan’s gaze.

“I… I wanted to see how Jakob was doing.”

One of Lucas’ eyebrows rose.

“I wanted to see you both, actually.”

Lucas said nothing. It only made Ryan all the more unsure.

“I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you guys. I mean…” Ryan knew he was rambling, but his mouth was on autopilot and he couldn’t stop the verbal chaos from stopping. “It’s not every day someone meets the supernatural, right?”

“Came to see the freaks, did you?”

Ryan frowned. “No. That’s not what I meant at all.”

“Then what did you mean?”

Ryan searched for the right words to say. He hadn’t been able to stop thinking about the two all day. He’d spent hours trying to find other things to do to take his mind off them and had failed miserably. So here he was. “I never liked coming to my uncle’s place. It’s out in the middle of nowhere, and it’s boring as shit. The town is dead. No one has lived there for as long as I can remember. There’s nothing around for miles. When I found out I’d inherited his old place, I wasn’t thrilled to come out here. But then I come across the least boring thing I’ve ever seen in my life. I’m… intrigued.”

Lucas searched his face a moment. “He was resting when I checked in on him a little while ago. Same room we took him to last night after surgery. Last door on the right.
