Staring down at the now complete set of lockpicking tools sitting on my desk, I drummed my fingers against the solid wood. What the hell was going through Kim and Martinez’s minds? Or, a better question—what wasn’t going through their minds? Even if my ex-wife was clueless and Martinez was strung out, I couldn’t even begin to guess how things came together for them.

Kim wanted me fired and suffering, just like her. That much was obvious. She blamed me for her situation, and she never hid her bitterness.

But the same couldn’t be said for Martinez. I had nothing to do with his divorce and pissing dirty. If he wanted to blame someone, he needed to blame Kim. . . but they were working together. Did he blame me for his discharge and divorce?

“That doesn’t explain why. . . or how he found out I’m a military contractor consultant.” My mumble was met with deafening silence, and I sat back heavily in my chair to bluster a sigh. “I have to call Mark. . .”

Just as I reached for my phone on the desk, a door slammed open somewhere, and I jumped up hastily. My heart leaped into my throat, and I left my office just as Mark himself came charging up the stairs. “Mark, hey, I was j—”

“Don’t talk to me right now!” Mark’s nasty snap cut through the air like a knife, and I tensed as he stomped past me to lock himself in his room. He didn’t even look at me, and I clenched and released my fists by my sides.

Almost immediately, Mark stormed back out of his room, yanking his door so hard it rattled through the house. He cried hot tears of frustration, and anger darkened his cheeks and eyes. The last time this happened, Kim had threatened him to his face to never see him again unless he convinced me to stop the divorce. Not even ask me, to try, but to halt the proceedings.

“What the fuck!” Blurting out the shrill shriek, Mark’s voice cracked sharply before he finally looked me in the face. Hurt blazed in his eyes, and my heart writhed painfully. “What’s wrong with her? She didn’t even ask me if I was home and got mad at me for not being here! I told Mom I was going with Uncle Wes to Provo this morning. I told her, and she—she told me that obviously I didn’t want her as my mom anymore since I wasn’t here when she even didn’t tell me she was coming!”

Mark’s words started to jumble a bit towards the end, his lower lip wobbling dangerously. He stomped his heel against the hardwood, panting furiously, and I quietly reached to grab his arm. My son’s lithe, thin body was stiff with resistance, trying to fight me and the tears, as I pulled him to my chest.

“Why are you so upset, son?” There was something else; there had to be. Mark wasn’t so thin-skinned that Kim’s bitching would phase him so much.
