CHAPTER ELEVEN

NAPOLEON

Ice frisked the walls as I curved my body around the oncoming Blackstone reserve player who should never have been on the ice and kissed the puck with my stick with as much grace as a fucking elephant.

The puck didn’t care about my hows and whys, and slid neatly between the blades of Blackstone’s goalie, my eighth successful shot in as many minutes. We hadn’t trounced them this good for over a year, but damn was I enjoying pulling it out for the assholes who abandoned me on the side of the highway in the desert weeks ago.

The crowd roared, lights flicked on, but all I had eyes for was the girl perched with her elbows on her knees next to Coach, her fingers interlaced tightly beneath her chin.

Damn, she was the sort of pretty that made me want to bend a knee, even though that had never been a factor in my life until she came along.

A big smile curved Wrenlee’s lips, but her eyes held concern. Her brow dipped, and she straightened, a hand held out, one finger pointing then–

More bright lights, all aimed into my retinas until I could practically smell the smoke, and a doctor’s face peered down at me.

“Napoleon Lancaster. Full name, date of birth and who the president is please, son.”

I frowned, rattling off the figures and let him poke and prod me. “What happened?”

“You were hit in the back of the head by two hockey sticks. Be glad you were wearing a helmet and be glad they’re both shit shots. You didn’t have to worry about them winning, son, but that team harbors some serious hate for you.”

“Yeah, it’s going around.” I raised a hand to the back of my head and pressed my fingers into my skull, searching for tender spots.

“Sore?”

“Not like I expected after that speech. Headache, and those lights hurt like fuck, but I think you’re right about the helmet.”

“That’s good, then.” He patched me up with some meds and an ice pack, plus a list of instructions and symptoms to look out for. “Do you have to drive home?”

I shook my head experimentally and only winced a little. “No. I–someone will get me back to Rippton.”

The joys of an away game. Travel sucked and while we usually took the buses for a longer trip, we were both playing an away game while Blackstone’s stadium was renovated, placing us a whole lot closer to home. The doctor left me to myself in the temporary med bay, and I closed my eyes if only to get away from the damn light.

“Leon. Hey. Crush?” Wrenlee’s light touch on my arm gave voice to her hesitation, and I knew it wasn’t the first time she’d said it.

I found her hand with mine, curling my fingers tightly around hers. She sighed softly at my side, though she was still too far away. Her warmth emanated, sinking through my bone cold hand. I drew her in closer, until her body pressed to my side.

“That’s better,” I said with my eyes still closed.
