RESISTANCE

Next, I want to know how fast the boat will be in varying conditions. The narrow waterline beam, short fin keel and small skeg give the R9-30 a small amount of wetted surface. Performance in the lower speed ranges, in light winds, should be excellent.

To evaluate the boat’s wave-making characteristics, I look at the displacement/length ratio and the underbody shape, particularly in the stern. The

displacement/length ratio for the R9-30 is quite low, indicating low wave-making resistance. The moderate stern overhang and the nearly straight and relatively shallow buttock lines reinforce this conclusion. While the hull shape is not that of a planing-oriented boat, it should have a long sailing length and be capable of reaching its maximum speed easily. Tha t max imum speed will be approximately 1.5 X \/26.4, or 7.7 knots.
