Chapter 11

“Uh-oh,” Millie said. “There’s smoke coming from the kitchen area.”

Several firefighters, dressed in full gear, dragged water hoses to the back of the building.

Nic and Millie made their way closer and the acrid smell of smoke wafted in the air.

An emergency vehicle pulled in next to one of the fire trucks. Two women sprang from the ambulance and jogged to the back of the building.

Millie took a tentative step forward, her heart pounding loudly as one of the firefighters shook his head. A second firefighter emerged from the building and motioned the EMTs inside. “Someone must’ve gotten hurt.”

The crowd grew quiet, as if holding a collective breath, and watched as one of the EMTs returned to the ambulance, rolled a stretcher from the back and carried it inside.

“I hope it’s not Nadia or Regan.” Millie watched as a firefighter pulled the hose to the side of the firetruck and began rolling it up. “It looks as if the fire is out.”

Moments later, the ambulance workers exited the back of the building, carrying the stretcher. Lying on the stretcher was a young woman. Her hand was wrapped in a bandage and there was another, larger one wrapped around her upper leg. She was alert and said something to the workers, but Millie wasn’t close enough to hear.

The EMTs eased the stretcher into the back of the ambulance before closing the doors and climbing into the cab. They drove onto the road and silently sped off.

Moments later, Regan emerged from the back of the building and stood talking to one of the firefighters, a grim expression on his face.

“Poor Regan and Nadia,” Nic murmured.

“Something fishy is going on here,” Millie said.

“I agree. No one can have that much bad luck. It looks as if the poor young woman on the stretcher was almost victim number four.”

“There’s nothing we can do here tonight,” Nic continued. “We’ll check on Regan and Nadia first thing in the morning.”

Millie contemplated the string of events and everything Nadia had told her as the couple silently made their way to the cottage. Was Regan’s bitter ex-partner trying to ruin his business and destroy his life? The partner would certainly be familiar with the resort’s layout.

Surely, the authorities would be looking closely at the partner, Wayne Clemson. If Clemson was behind the deaths, was he dumb enough to keep up with the criminal activities and murders in the midst of more than one open investigation?

Perhaps it was Ellen Fulbright’s husband; trying to throw the authorities off, making it look like someone inside the resort…a worker…had murdered his wife. If so, he was going to a lot of trouble to cast suspicion on someone else, but then again, if he had been responsible for his wife’s death, he was trying to get away with murder.

Millie made a mental note to ask Nadia if the Fulbrights had toured the kitchen or taken the cooking class. Raoul had died after being trapped inside the walk-in freezer and now this…two of the four incidents had occurred in the main building’s kitchen area.
