ELORA CRACKED OPEN THE door, peering outside it while flutters whipped under her skin. Two figures stood just outside Quintus’s home, a male and a female. After determining that much, it seemed silly that she hadn’t swung the door open all the way. She had already betrayed her presence by simply opening the door.

It swung on its hinges as she pushed it open fully. Setting her feet in the middle of the doorway, she tried to take up as much space in it as possible. A little intimidation never hurt. For good measure, she gripped her sword and wore the darkest glare she could manage.

Despite her theatrics, the two fae in front of her didn’t react in any way. She had never seen either of them before. They both had fair skin, which meant they most likely came from Mistmount, Noble Rose, or Fairfrost. The male fae had blue eyes with silvery threads. The female fae had white-blonde hair and a friendly smile.

But Elora had been in Faerie long enough to know that friendly smiles could be deceiving. Nothing about their clothes gave any hints as to which court they belonged. They wore simple tunics and trousers in a nondescript tan color. The fabric even seemed rougher than any she had ever seen in Faerie. It almost looked like it had come from the mortal realm.

After her moment of observation, Elora finally glanced behind them. The lush forest of Bitter Thorn had moss and black briars growing everywhere as usual. As dense as the trees were, they didn’t quite cover a large creature with purple and white scales and veiny wings.

A dragon.

Clutching her sword tighter, Elora took a step back. “You are Fairfrost fae.” Fairfrost was the only court with dragons, at least as far as she knew. Sliding the sword from her braided belt, she narrowed her eyes at the pair of them.

The fae with the blonde hair and the friendly smile stepped forward. She held both hands out with her palms up. “We are not here to hurt you. We are here to help you.”

It seemed like an appropriate time to scoff in disbelief right up until the moment Elora remembered fae couldn’t lie. The fae had spoken with simple, blunt sentences. Was there a way she could have deceived with them? It didn’t seem likely.

The blonde fae gestured toward herself and then to her companion. “My name is Tindra, and this is Severin.”

White teeth flashed behind the male fae’s smile. Severin. Elora had heard the name recently, though it took her a few precious moments to place it. The two fae continue to grin at her while she thought, as though they could win her over with nothing more than their smiles.

After a sharp intake of breath, Elora ripped her sword from her belt and shoved the tip of it just under Severin’s jaw. In her other hand, she still held the cluster of purple wildflowers. “You are Queen Alessandra’s brother.”

He snorted. It wasn’t from fear either. Actual delight filled his eyes at the sound of her accusation.
