Chapter Thirteen

“Let me go!”

Gilly screamed again, attempting to pull herself away from the rapidly transforming creature. Lina’s features were entirely gone now, having appeared to melt off her face. She was now facing some sort of horrible amphibious beast. She could feel the tiny suckers on its hands puckering against her skin, and the sensation almost drove her mad.

“No!” Gilly gathered herself before she lost it entirely. “This isn’t real. This is a nightmare!” She closed her eyes and pictured her sister as she was. Please, make this end!

Suddenly, the thing squeezing her vanished. She opened her eyes, blinking heavily, then turned to find a fully dressed Solomon with his back to the window, staring at her. His face was like stone, anger narrowing his dark eyes.

“That was a neat trick,” he murmured. “Who was the woman?”

Gilly let out a breath and sat down shakily. “Am I still dreaming?” she asked herself, pinching her arm.

“No, you shattered the dream a moment ago.” Solomon took a few steps forward, his face black with rage. “And now you’re going to tell me who you were giving such specific instructions to.”

“How did you...I mean...I wasn’t...” Gilly tried to get a hold on herself. She’d been dreaming, and then suddenly, she wasn’t. But she didn’t want to give away their plan, didn’t want him to know that Lina and the others were coming for her. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You think me a fool?” His voice was strained, and he sounded as if he was on the verge of losing control. “You’re a dream walker, and so is the woman you spoke with. It’s a rare talent, just like mine.”

“And what is your talent?” she snapped, “besides annoying the crap out of me.” She glared at him as a realization hit her. “You’re the one who did that...you turned the dream into a nightmare somehow.”

He didn’t answer, instead lunging forward and grabbing her arms. “You told her where you were and where we are headed. She’s planning to rescue you, isn’t she?”

“That’s right,” Gilly shouted, deciding to switch tactics. “They know exactly where I am and will be showing up any minute now. But if you free me and unlock this collar around my neck, I’ll ask them to be merciful.”

“Maybe I’ll wait for your sister to show up,” he said, his voice laced with menace. Gilly started at the word sister, but she knew it wasn’t something they could hide, being twins. “I’ll sell you both to the prince as a matched set, and my influence with the Archon will be unmatched.”

“Try it,” Gilly snarled in reply, “and you’ll have an entire realm of Fae ready to gut you like the coward you are.”

“We’re leaving,” he said, the command in his voice unmistakable. He began shoving things into his pack, grumbling to himself. “I leave you for less than hour, and I come back to find you talking in your sleep. A little peek inside your dreams revealed your duplicity, proving that I can’t take my eyes off you for a second, even in sleep.
