CHAPTER ELEVEN

“I need to get back to the island. If I’m not back soon, it will be suspicious.”

Blair tried to project just the right amount of fear as she stammered, “Wh-why are you doing this?”

“Because your husband is very wealthy, and he will pay a great deal of money to get you back.”

“You…drugged me.”

“Did I?” The steps creaked as Blair’s abductor eased down the narrow stairs.

Come closer. Just a little closer. Too bad Blair wasn’t wearing her leaf weapon earrings. But she was still ready to fight.

“You did. And…” Blair studied her abductor. “You aren’t working alone.”

“Aren’t you the chatty one today?” A smile. “But no, I’m not working alone.”

This whole scene was wrong. “You’re letting me see your face,” Blair whispered. That was such a bad sign.

Her abductor’s smile stretched.

Blair’s heart squeezed. “You’re not going to let me go.”

“Actually, I am. But I’m not going to give you back to your husband.” A shrug. “He’ll pay five million. And then the next bidder will pay, too. Turns out, you’re in high demand.”

“What?” A second bidder hadn’t been part of any scenario that she’d run in her head. “What second bidder?”

“Don’t worry. You’ll find out soon enough.”

Her heart raced too quickly.

“The second bidder wants the pleasure of killing you.”

Wonderful, so it was a pleasure?

“The second bidder seems very angry with you. Seems to have all sorts of plans in place. So it doesn’t matter if you see my face. You won’t be living long enough to tell anyone about me.”

“I need a phone, now!” Linc blasted as he slammed his fist against Natasha’s desk. “My wife was kidnapped—fucking kidnapped—and I have to get her back! I have to—”

“Sir!” Natasha grabbed his arm and dragged him toward the nearby door marked STAFF. She hauled him inside and shut the door with a quick click. “I understand that you’re stressed, but you have to keep your voice down. In situations like this, you can’t panic.”

He gaped at her as if she’d lost her mind. “Situations like this? You act as if this has happened before!”

Her gaze cut away.

“Shit. This has happened before. This island is such a friggin’ pit of hell! Honeymoon heaven, my ass!”

Natasha cleared her throat. “I have a phone that you can use. Guests are not allowed phones, but we do have them here for high level staff members. You can call your bank. You can make arrangements for the money that you need—”

She was ice cold.

She rattled on about getting money. About it being brought to the island and—

“You’re in on it,” Linc said flatly.

Natasha blinked.

“You have to be. I mean…you’re so cool.” He shook his head. “You’ve done this before? To other people? What in the hell is wrong with you?”

Her eyes became saucers. “I’m not in on anything!”

“I think you are.” He closed in on her. “I think you know who took my wife. I think you know where she is right now.”

Her lower lip trembled. “Follow the demands that the kidnappers gave you. If you give them what they want, you will get your wife back.
