“Freja, Freja?” A sing-song voice pulled her from sleep, and she blinked weary eyes at Mikhail.

“Hey.” Scrubbing away the sleep, she hauled her tired and sore body up to sitting against the mound of pillows against the headboard.

“Are you sure you’re up for this?” Mikhail was looking over her, concern etched on his face.

“Yes, as long as I get some coffee?” It came out as a question.

“I’ll get it.” Nilan grinned and disappeared.

“Freja, are you ready to meet everyone?” Kadin smiled at her. “Or do we need to wait for coffee?” There was a teasing lilt to his voice.

“No, I’m ready. As long as they don’t mind my haystack hair.” She gestured to her head.

“It’s not that bad,” Mikhail assured her.

She simply snorted. “I’m well aware of how bad it looks most mornings, so I can only imagine what it’s like now, but thank you for being kind.”

“You know, you’re a breath of fresh air.” Kadin gently pushed her foot to one side as he took up position on the end of her bed.

“Why, because I know my hair is a mess, and I can admit it?”

“Partly, yes. Mostly, it’s because you don’t care about it, not truly. That you don’t need to be dressed to perfection as people wait on you hand and foot. It’s the fact you didn’t hesitate to help Naoyuki, even though we now know how tired you already were. Then, even now, when you’re still tired, you’ve offered help, and have agreed to compromises so you can do that. I may not spend much time around the nobility, at the palace, or even in the city, but even I know how rare that is.”

“I know the type of people you mean, and it’s not just women, either. There are plenty of people on my world who are like that. But the way I see it, I’m nothing special, and I’m not above anyone else.” She held her hand up, stopping him from saying anything. “I know some of you think I am, but not as far as I’m concerned. I’m different. I have magic on a level that no one else does. That doesn’t make me special, or worth more than anyone else, it just makes me more indispensable, perhaps.”

“That may be true, but I have the feeling that you’re not going to change anyone’s minds when they say you’re special.” Kadin grinned at Nilan as he handed her a large coffee. “Now you have that, let me introduce the other Protectors here. We have Kalan, Zayna, Bila, and Kang.” As he mentioned each Protector they stepped forward, either smiling or waving at her. “These are the Protectors who have witch skills. They’ve promised me that they’re going to do everything they can to help you.”

Bila stepped forward, her violet eyes shining brightly. “We’re excited to be able to help, to make a difference.” She darted a glance at the others. “On top of that, and I know I speak for the others, I’m eager to work on this.
