CHAPTER 10

After that last long kiss, while being held in Ryan's arms in a way that made Annie feel protected and almost loved, she was hit with two realizations, both difficult to understand. The first was that she wanted to be held and kissed like that again… and again… and again. And the second was that Ryan had passed up spending time with Genevieve to be with her. Why a man as handsome as Ryan would do that was baffling, but she accepted the fact that maybe Ryan really did care about her. But now she felt petty and ashamed with the way she'd been behaving toward her half-sister. Genevieve had a lot of guts to come to the ranch and chance being turned away. Annie couldn't see herself knocking on the door of a house where a woman lived who'd had an affair with her father, just to get to know her sister.

So after brushing and turning Mack out into the pasture, she headed for the house, assuming Genevieve would be there, probably sitting in the spare bedroom wondering why she'd even stayed. The half-sister she'd come to meet had not exactly been a gracious hostess. It also wasn't fair to leave her mother with Genevieve, because it had to be awkward, although her mother didn't make it appear that way.

On entering the kitchen from the back of the house, Annie found her mother holding her portable paint box and easel in one hand, and her folding canvas stool in the other, and knew she was about to set out on her horse to some spot where there were wild flowers, and paint. Her mother had been supplying paintings of the vistas and scenes around them for stationary and greeting card companies, for as far back as Annie could remember. But now she was in the process of writing a book for a Pacific Northwest publishing company, on the wildflowers of southeastern Oregon, which would include her own illustrations.

"Mom?" Annie said. "Is Genevieve in her room?"

Ruth paused on her way to the door, and replied, "I think so, honey, and you really need to spend some time with her. I asked if she wanted to come along with me today and she declined, and I know it's because she wants to be with you."

"I've had a lot of things to do, but I have the rest of the afternoon set aside," Annie said, knowing it was a half-truth, but one she hoped was behind her now.

"Tell Dad I'll be back for dinner," Ruth said. "There's already a roast in the oven and your lentil loaf's in the fridge." She kissed Annie and left.

Annie turned out of the kitchen into the dining room and started through the living room, surprised to see Genevieve coming down the stairs. Genevieve smiled, like she was glad to see her. Annie offered her own tentative smile, and said, "I'm finished with my chores and have the rest of the afternoon free so we can talk and get to know each other better.
