Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage

Perhaps the principal act of the human drama focuses on the complex game surrounding the marriage contract. The energies invested and the tactics adopted to attract and secure a partner are associated with some of the more intense instances of joy and disappointment in our daily lives. As a cultural invention, marriage typically sets rules that to a degree defy the forces inherent in anisogamy, differential parental investment, and sexual selection. As a result, marriage constitutes a complex and potentially fragile relationship. While the pair-bond often lasts many years, even a lifetime, either or both parties may occasionally participate in extramarital liasons and eventually may even leave the union altogether. The inclination to cheat, cut the knot, and remarry is lively. Moreover, since men typically make the lesser parental investment, they are the more likely to cheat—and thus to intensify already latent discord.
