Chapter Thirteen

SCARLETT

A soft caress woke me from my slumber, and before I opened my eyes, I imagined it was Draven. An image of him flared to life in my mind. Tall, dark, handsome, with those sexy crimson eyes trained on every inch of me. And tonight he'd be pleased because I'd thought to grab a nightshirt rather than sleep in my regular clothes.

His touch began at my ankle, soft yet firm, and slowly edged it's way up my outer leg, and he traced the silhouette of my sleeping form. I could almost hear the slight hitch of unnecessary breath in his throat as his fingers traced dangerously close to my thigh. When he came in contact with the soft cotton hem of his own t-shirt, I felt my body respond with a flash of heat. I'd borrowed it our first night together. Not only did it still hold the faint smell of sandalwood and power that was all Draven, but there was also a musky hint reminiscent of our first tryst.

"Tell me you want me and I'll be yours," I crooned, waiting for him to pull the fabric high enough to reveal my naughty secret. Underneath the fabric, my skin was utterly bare. There was no need for undergarments when you laid in bed beside your mate.

His fingers paused, and I felt the tips pulse with anticipation. Instead of moving under the fabric and finding my surprise, he released me. The once-hot touch disappeared in a blink and startled me wide awake. "Draven? Are you there?" I rubbed at my eyes and peered into the darkness.

A tiny flicker of light from a receptacle across the room gave a sliver of light. Enough to remind me I wasn't at home or Draven's apartment. No. I was in Brooklyn, sleeping in Nigel's lab in the autopsy room. Sure, Draven called it an operating suite, but I'd only see autopsies performed here. Perhaps my mate had a twisted sense of humor.

"I didn't mean to startle you, Kisa."

My ears perked, and I bolted upright in the sleeping box. "Mikhail?" My eyes adjusted to the dark enough that his outline on a stool near the surgical table came into focus. "What are you doing here?"

He drooped his head. "I wish I could explain it. Something compelled me to come to you. The sun hasn't even fully set yet but I was called to you. Does that even make sense?" His words were coated with sadness.

"Is everything okay? Has there been word about Draven?" I tugged the edge of the tee down to cover more of my thighs.

"No. I'm not even sure anyone else has risen yet tonight." His hands balled into fists in his lap. "But something gave me reason to rise early, Scarlett. Many would call it a dream, but back in the time of my origin, it was known as foresight."

"Like a premonition? I asked as I tried to figure out a way to climb out of the sleeping chamber box without showing him my goods.
