CHAPTER 5 - JANE
âAll right, be honest; how bad does it look? And now would not be a great time to tell me youâre squeamish, cause I really donât need you puking on my shoes.â
Donna leaned in close. The eye was completely destroyed. It was as though someone had driven a knife directly into the socket and twisted it.
âIt looksâ¦â Donna struggled to find the vocabulary to match the sight before finally settling on, ââ¦Okay?â
Jane scoffed. âDonât bullshit me, honey. Itâs alright, I can take it. Iâm officially a fucking cyclops, right?â She managed a mirthless chuckle. âStill, thanks for coming along when you did. Iâd have probably lost both eyes had Iâd stayed out any longer.â
Jane took out a pocketbook and pen. âThis is some crazy shit going on. We need to be organized. This stormâ¦â she began writing. âThis is some highbrow Mother Nature retaliation or something. People get caught up in a snowstorm, they take all kinds of steps; they clear roads, coordinate traffic. You donât really worry about losing too many people. But this? Never seen anything like it in my lifetime. And probably not in anyone elseâs lifetime. I donât know how we can work around it. So, until some bigwig with a desk comes around and tells me otherwise, weâre going to need to work out as much as we can about this fucking storm.
âNow, as to where it came from⦠fuck knows. Environment fighting back, toxic clouds, aliens invading, the list of possibilities is endless. But what we do know is it turned the sky red⦠which doesnât really help us one iota. So, Iâm presuming everyone felt the burning sand, correct?â
Both Donna and Eric showed the marks on their clothes and skin caused by the microscopic incisions.
âOkay, we need to find some way to protect against that. Padded clothing is probably the best bet for now.â
ââPadded clothingâ?â repeated Eric incredulously. âThatâs seriously your best defence?â
Jane glared at him pointedly. âItâs the only one thatâll be easily available to us. Thereâs plenty of clothes stores around here we can raid. And I didnât get round to reading the Idiotâs Guide to Sandstorms from Hell yet, so forgive me if Iâm not a fountain of knowledge.â
Jane turned to Donna. âYou seem like a fairly sensible woman. What are your thoughts?â
Donna blinked. âWho, me?â
âCan you see anyone else around here fitting that description?â
Donna couldnât remember the last time anyone had bothered to ask for her opinion, or at least hold it in any esteem. âI say we try to make contact with someone in government, or some sort of official. We need people to help set up boundaries. I saw looting everywhere.â
âThat doesnât surprise me,â remarked Jane, nonplussed. âWhen the world goes to shit, people arenât far behind.â
âHave you heard from anyone?â asked Eric.
âCanât say I haveâ said Jane. âI tried getting them on the radio, but I lost the signal.â
âWhat do you think theyâll be doing?â queried Donna.
âWell, knowing these fat cats as I
