State Crime

There is much discrepancy between the various terminologies used to define State crime, but for the purpose of this study, the following definition will be referred to:

The term State crime suggests crime committed on behalf of a State […] while the term Governmental crime […] can more naturally be applied to crimes committed within a Governmental context on any level, and not necessarily on behalf of the State. (Friedrichs 2000: 53–54)

Upon closer analysis of the DRC, it was found that the crimes committed by the powerful were incidences of State crime, rather than governmental crime, as those at the top have one shared goal of profiting from their political agenda. One indication of this happening in the DRC is that governmental recruitment has been ‘plagued by high levels of patronage’ and this involved a lengthy and complicated process that led to a ‘complex patronage network’ (Transparency International 2014: n.p.). This, in turn, implies that the powerful in the DRC only recruited those who they trusted and those who shared the same goal.
