Offence Type and Reporting

The most severe sexual offences were mostly reported by victims to either BTP staff or the police. However, a small number of victims used text to make reports. For non-penetrative assaults, public indecency and exposure, the most common way to report was using the public non-emergency phone number. For voyeurism, reporting directly to BTP staff was the most common method of notifying authorities (Fig. 3).

Reporting source also varied by offence type. As expected, police were more frequently the reporting source for more serious offences, including rape and penetrative assault, compared with less serious ones (Fig. 4). This number was particularly low for voyeurism, which, like rape and penetrative assault, is a low-volume sexual offence. For the higher-volume sexual offences, the sources differed less, though reports sourced from victims were higher for non-penetrative assaults than for public indecency, and, in turn, higher for these than for indecent exposure incidents (Fig. 4).
