P. G. WODEHOUSE

P(elham) G(renville) Wodehouse (1881-1975) was the most celebrated fiction humorist since Mark Twain. His amazing career spanned the first seventy-five years of this century: He was still chronicling the adventures of Jeeves, Bertie Wooster, Mr. Mulliner, Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge, and the many other characters who populated his very special world at the time of his death at age ninety-four. Wodehouse was a lifelong devotee of the mystery story, and much of his fiction contains criminous elements—the novels Leave It to Psmith and Laughing Gas, for instance, and such short stories as “Without the Option” (which features that inimitable duo, Jeeves and Bertie Wooster). The best of his comic capers can be found in the posthumously published collection, Wodehouse on Crime (1981).
