CHAPTER 12 | REBUFFED

“H

i, you’ve reached the voicemail of Brooke Leighton. Sorry I can’t take your call right now, but if you leave your name and num—” With a frustrated growl, I ended the call without leaving a message and tossed the damn phone on the coffee table. It was the sixth time I’d called her that day—probably around the twentieth over all for the past couple days.

I hadn’t heard from Brooke since the night I drove her home, and that worried me. Maybe I’d pushed her too far by telling her that her current relationship wouldn’t work. It wasn’t that I was suggesting she be with me—though I wouldn’t be opposed to that happening—but I knew how difficult it could be to maintain human relationships when going through this transition and learning to control one’s powers. It wasn’t easy, and someone was bound to get hurt.

With every ignored call, I couldn’t help but assume the worst.

“Still no luck?” Corbin asked from the couch as he flipped through the channels on the TV. I shook my head. “Have you tried going to her place?”

“She lives with her boyfriend. It wouldn’t go over very well.”

Corbin shrugged. “I bet it can’t be any worse than what could happen if she loses control of herself.” He looked like he regretted his words as soon as they left his mouth. “Shit... I’m sorry, man. I didn’t mean—”

“Don’t be. You’re not wrong,” I assured him. “But I can’t seem to get her to see that. She thinks she can handle it.”

“We all do,” Jackson said, coming down the stairs. It was one of the few times he wasn’t being an asshole. It was an unsettling but welcome change to his usual behavior. “She’ll come around. The kid’s right, though. You should go to her place and talk to her. Make sure she’s okay. With Gianna still out there, we can’t be sure when or where she’ll strike.”

“Marcus seems to think Gianna’s plan was for me to bite Brooke all along as payback for my burning that nest,” I stated. “Maybe we haven’t been able to find her because she’s done what she came here to do.”

Jackson contemplated this for a moment. “Or maybe Brooke was meant to distract you from what she was really up to. She’s already killed a few people—that we know of. None of the victims are in their graves anymore, and we don’t know how many others were lured to that warehouse.”

I was about to tell him he was being paranoid when Vince spoke up. “She’s still up to something, Nick. We can all feel it. The only reason you don’t see it is because Gianna’s backed you into this corner. Even when we’re out patrolling, your mind is on Brooke—worrying about her, and rightfully so.”

“It kills me to say this, but we need you on board,” Jackson added. “We need to stay united, let her see that her tactics aren’t working. We need you to track her.”

I couldn’t deny that my mind had been more preoccupied with how to help Brooke than on our mission to stop Gianna.
