VIX’S HEAD FELL BACK against the chair cushion as she realized she’d accidentally shown Gails her cards. How to spin this? How to make it sound like her saying an attacker knew her name wasn’t what she just meant?

You know what? Screw it.

Sitting forward, she drew in Gails’ eye contact as she spoke. “I don’t know the person, but they know of me. Somehow.”

Just talking about the attack brought anxiety to the surface. She hated this, hated vulnerability, hated opening up and giving people ammunition to hurt her with later.

With an inhale, she tried again. “When the guy assaulted me, he said my name.”

“Only your name?”

“He said something about the Righteous, and ever-something. I don’t know. Then he said I was lucky. Wait, no, he said I was ‘one of the lucky ones’, which are exactly the words Dean Wallstone used when I got shoved into Pent.”

Gails’ expression twisted. “Righteous? Is that like a group or something?”

“No clue.” If she was being honest with herself, ha ha, it did feel a little better to tell someone else. “All I know is, this dude scared the shit out of me. Even if he hadn’t said my name, the whole experience was terrifying.”

He knelt in front of her, a hand on her knee, and smelling so much like sandalwood. “I can imagine.”

Tears threatened, but she blinked them away. No, Baby Girl, not now.

Deep in her purse, her phone chimed. Another voicemail.

“Gails?”

“Yeah?”

She hesitated only because she fought asking for what she needed. “Can you stay here tonight? At least while I’m asleep?”

Gails nodded consent. “Sure.”

Relief swept through her. Could she be alone in her own place? Absolutely. Would she be able to sleep on her own? Hell, no. A slight smile creased the corners of her mouth.

“Oh my god, you two.” The white haze of Marva dissolved and seeped through the couch until she spilled onto the floor like low fog. “Get a damn room.”
