Third Killer Technique: Write your Stories on Paper

How to Tell a Story through Writing?

Now we will be focusing on creative writing in the form of novels. You may have dreamed of creating a novel multiple times in the past. All writers do. Writers always have a plot in mind. They never run out of ideas for characters. However, not all writers are sure how they are going to start. This is the fifth stage of the creative process - execution. This is the part where 75% of the writers in the world get stuck.

What is it that is keeping you from staining those blank sheets with the ink of your pen? Is it laziness? Procrastination? Is it because “you just don’t have the time”? Have you ever considered that the ultimate cause of your inactivity isn’t all those? That what is really keeping you from writing is fear?

You fear making mistakes. You fear writing sentences that are not worthy of recognition. You fear the idea of writing so much but having to scratch it all out and start from zero. You fear that somebody else has written what you are planning to write. Admit it. You are not writing because you are afraid of failure.

It isn’t entirely your fault. Anthony Lishak, a famous children’s author, observed that the current education system instills fear in people from a young age. For over 30 years, Anthony worked in the academe, specifically in grade school, educating children with stories and listening to how teachers teach language and literature. He found out that most teachers become force feeders of information and that most curricula have rigid structure that do not allow for students to be creative.

Writing becomes a chore because children are taught to write about things they do not want to write about, while being heavily scrutinized for their grammar and sentence structure. Some teachers even use writing as a punishment.

Children, who initially have so much creativity are bound by strict rules. They started out having so much creativity that they focus more on content rather than structure. They tell creative stories. However, as they learn about grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and other structural elements, they start limiting the words that they write. This is because they start to become afraid of making mistakes. When it comes to written prose, teachers do not give as much recognition on creativity than they do on proper grammar. Children grow up learning that creativity will not get them anywhere as far as academic achievement is concerned.

Now, how do you revert to the creative child that you once were? It’s simpler than you think: start writing. You have a story to tell and the best way to do it is to write it - NOW. Do not pay so much attention to your vocabulary or sentence structure. Do not hinder yourself from writing your story spontaneously just because you are conscious about your punctuation. As Anthony Lishak said, speak through your pen and put your voice onto paper. You do not need to show it to anybody unless you are pleased with it.
