But technology has also driven many improvements in the publishing process. In the old days, writers would send a script to the editor, who would shepherd it through the creative and production processes. In many cases, that would be the last time the writer would see the comic book until it hit the stands.
New technology has made it possible for writers and editors to make changes and improvements to the final product without dramatically altering the publishing timeline. âNow, the writer and the editor have the ability to keep tweaking the book until the story is exactly what they want,â says Eliopoulos. âIt's another tool that helps writers and artists tell their story better.â
And if your sights are set on lettering, get ready for plenty of tweaking. âI've done a number of books where I've â in essence â relettered the book five times, and the story is nothing like it was when we started,â says Eliopoulos. âAnd to this day people ask me, âDid you like working on that book? Wasn't it a good story?â And I can't even tell you what the story was about anymore because I redid it so many times that I lost the line of the story.â
That said, being flexible and open to improvement is critical to the success of a letterer and his work. âYou need to be humble. You need to be a listener. You need to understand that criticism is not a bad thing. If somebody is kind enough to give you criticism, it means they care enough to tell you how to get better,â says Eliopoulos. âAnd if you think that you're so good that you don't need improvement, you're not a professional. I have been doing this twenty years and I still seek improvement in everything that I do. The minute you're satisfied with your work is the minute you're out of the business.â
