I have learned a lot about myself working with Delta, and one of those things is that I enjoy having an office. A place I can shut the door to the outside world for some semblance of peace; a place to unwind and relax. Well, that is undoubtedly not this office.

On my first day, one of the therapists with a squinty nose and mouse brown frizzy hair almost tripped over the carpet on the way in. Granted, she was staring at me while trying to flatten her hair so she wasn't paying attention, but when I dismissed her and looked at the spot, it definitely was raised. I look at the brown barren room with the many water spots on the ceiling and keep thinking to myself that this is unacceptable.

Before Ember's first visit I managed to grab one of the sofas in the lobby, cleaned it as best I could and then grabbed other things I either needed or would make the room look less like a prison and more like an office. I even grabbed some things from the closest safe house to make it more comfortable with pillows and a bookshelf.

I keep telling myself that this is a better environment for Ember to collect her mind in, but really it relaxes me as well. Maybe I can get Coal to paint the two walls with brown stains a dark green… I wonder what color Ember would like.

I cringe at my own thoughts of her as I work on my laptop. I am the doctor, so I am supposed to know what is the best environment to keep her happy and in a state to talk to me. I need to get Ember comfortable and happy, so that we can start trying to retrieve her memories. I wouldn't mind smelling that sweet fragrance of hers as it fills the room when she is present either.

I shake my head to clear my mind of her, but I can't deny that she fascinates me. Not only with her beauty - even a blind buffoon could tell she was exquisite - but I could tell the whole session she was thinking of what to say to me. I could tell she either gave me half-truths or skirted around the issue until she could figure out her moves. She is treating our sessions like a game of chess, and instead of infuriating me, it excites and intrigues me. Finally, a true intellectual opponent.

As I am coming up with the game plan for our next meeting, my door opens and Finn strolls in like the lazy idiot he is. “How you doing, doc? You gonna fix my brain up real good?” he croaks in a hillbilly hick accent as he points to his head, his eyes rolling around. I remind myself that he is looking for a reaction to his antics, and I won’t play into it.

In truth, I forgot we had a meeting scheduled for now. I was able to schedule it so that while I am here, I am only taking “special” cases.
