Crissanne let herself into Ethan’s house using the key he’d given her. Bart and Ethan’s housekeeper were both out of town for the weekend, and Ethan had needed to leave her at the country club when he got a call that one of his clients had gotten himself in trouble.

The house was quiet except for the subtle whir of the central air-conditioning. But then as she was walking toward the kitchen she heard a curse from Ethan’s office and the sound of a glass shattering.

She hesitated, wondering if she should leave and let him have the house to himself tonight. She hadn’t even realized he was already home. But then she decided she was done with running. She’d run from Los Angeles to Cole’s Hill, from Cole’s Hill back to Los Angeles and from Mason to Ethan. And now she was here.

She was staying put. Wasn’t that what today had been all about? Setting down roots in the community? She couldn’t wait to talk with the Realtor—she’d already seen a listing for a small space in the historic district that she could lease for her office and photography studio.

She knocked on his door and saw him sitting on the large leather love seat between the bookcases with a glass of something that looked like whiskey in one hand and his laptop balanced on his knees.

There was a broken glass near the bookcase next to the wall.

He glanced up at her and smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. Then he gestured for her to come in and she did, slipping her shoes off at the door. The floor was a beautiful Spanish tile, cool against her bare feet as she walked over to him. The room smelled of books and cigars and Ethan’s cologne. As she got closer to him she noticed he had an earpiece in.

He hit a button on his keyboard. “Sorry, Crissy, I’m on a conference call.”

“That’s okay. You sounded pissed.”

He shook his head and lifted his glass to his mouth and took a long swallow. “I work with idiots.”

She had to laugh at the way he said it. Ethan was one of the smartest men she knew and normally so even-tempered. But not tonight.

“Can I do anything?” she asked.

He shrugged. “Not really.”

She started to leave but got only halfway across the room before she glanced back and saw the way he was sitting there looking at the screen. Looking so alone. She realized that there were all kinds of running and this sort of isolation was Ethan’s version.

She turned around, taking the cashmere throw off the back of one of the guest chairs and putting it on the floor at Ethan’s feet. She sat down on it next to his legs, putting her hand in his.

He squeezed her fingers, and then put his hand on the side of her head, loosening her braid so that her hair fell around her shoulders. She tipped her head back to look up at him. He pushed a button on his laptop and set it aside.
