It’s the cave again. Hurray. How very unexpected.

“You’re back,” the three voices say as one.

“Not by choice,” I grumble. “What do you want?”

I know I should probably be more polite; who knows how powerful these beings are. But I’m fed up with being taken here without my permission. Right now, I want to be with Ruby and Alis, not in a dark cave with whatever is here with me.

“How is the Key?” one of them asks.

“My daughter is very well, thank you,” I snap. “Why did you call me here?”

“Things are progressing fast,” a second voice says. “We need her to help us now.”

I laugh coldly. “My daughter is a toddler who can’t even talk yet. I don’t think she’ll be of much help to you.”

“She’s growing, is she not?” the first voice says. A statement, not a question. She knows exactly what’s going on with Ruby. “It won’t be long until she’ll be ready to help us. And we’ve found a way to make it so even faster.”

“You have?” I ask. “How?”

I can feel them move in the darkness, but I don’t see anything but shadows. I wish they’d show themselves. I want to know who I’m dealing with.

“Are you willing to help your daughter?” they all ask together.

“Of course!”

“The love of a mother is the only thing strong enough to turn her into the Key we need,” the third voice whispers ominously. “You’ve made your choice. With your help, she will grow.”

Before I can ask what’s going on, the circle of candles around me flickers out. I’m in complete darkness now.

“Why did you do that?” I shout, my voice echoing through the cave. No reply. I extend my hands and carefully step forward. There’s no resistance this time. Whatever power held me in place until now has disappeared.

“Hello?” I ask, a little apprehensive. A feeling of dread is creeping over my skin. There could be anything hiding in this darkness. I still haven’t decided whether the three mysterious voices are friend or foe. It could have all been a trick. This may not even be real. Just a weird creepy dream.

I take another step forward. The wall should be close now. Maybe I can make my way along the cave walls until I find an exit. Although I’m not actually here in person, right? Perhaps I should just wait until I wake up. This is all beginning to feel very, very wrong.
