I found her. She’s in the gym.

Sven sent a message right back.

Does that girl ever sleep?

Good question.

Ranger stowed his phone and focused on Piper. Her charcoal-gray tights outlined every inch of her form, leaving little to the imagination. The crop top cut off below her breasts and showed off her defined abs while displaying the ugly green bruise in the stages of healing on her left side. As he watched, she alternated between punching the bag and throwing hard kicks that sent it swinging wildly. Gloves covered her hands, protecting them from the hard leather.

Her motions seemed effortless, yet powerful. Fluidity and grace combined with accuracy and strength. Sweat glistened on her forehead and the back of her neck. However long she’d been at it, she now breathed hard as she danced around, aiming at her chosen opponent.

As impressed as he was, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was bugging her. Not just an excess of energy or lack of an ice rink to zip around, either.

He opened the door and walked in.

Piper glanced his direction, then immediately returned to her workout.

Ranger closed the distance between them, stopping nearby. “You’re up early.”

“Yeah.” She punched the bag a couple more times.

“Any particular reason you’re not snug and warm in bed like the rest of the team?”

She turned to him. “You mean like you are?”

He heard the bite to her tone and read the tension in her entire body. Something was bothering her. Immensely. He just had to get to the heart of the matter to find out. Difficult, but not impossible.

He changed tactics. “You’re pretty good at that. Kick-boxing, right?”

“Yeah.” Piper paused and grabbed the bag before it could bump into her. “I’ve been doing this and karate since I was six years old. I wanted to be able to protect myself.”

Ranger treaded carefully. “Odd for a six-year-old to think about having to protect herself.”

She lifted her chin and met his gaze as her eyes welled up. “My mother always seemed to have to have a man around. I remember one right after another. Then she chose this one loser. He slapped her a couple of times. I was scared and told her. She tried to reassure me that she’d made him mad and that it was no big deal. I knew it was wrong, but didn’t know what else to do. Then, one night, they argued. He started beating on her. I hid, hearing her screams as he yelled and continued to knock her around. I didn’t know what to do. Too scared to do more than hide under the stairs, I waited for it to end. Once it went silent, I decided to run and made it almost to the front door before he grabbed me. One look at his face and I knew he’d kill me. Somehow I made it to my mother’s cell phone and called nine-one-one. It was too little too late for my mother.” She sniffed and raised one shaky hand to wipe her forehead.
