Chapter Eleven
Dr. Thea Patterson looked frazzled when she came into Lily’s limited view. “Afternoon, Lily. How are you feeling?”
“Sore, but I’m a bit more awake today.”
“Good to hear it. Let me look and see how things are healing.” The doctor peeled back the gauze and ran a finger down the stitches on Lily’s back. She cut through the bandage on Lily’s head and examined that injury as well. “Not bad. I’m not seeing any infection.”
“I feel a little warm.”
“Your temperature is up, but that is your body’s natural reaction to trauma. Your latest labs show your white cell count is up so I’m going to order blood and urine cultures to rule out an infection.”
“Cool.”
“All right. I’m going to test your sensation now.”
“Okay, doc. When we’re done, can I ask you questions?”
“Of course.”
Dr. Patterson spent the next several minutes stabbing Lily with various instruments. She felt the pricks when the doctor finally reached areas that were no longer numb. For most of her lower back and legs, she felt some pressure but no pain, though she noticed she had more sensation today than she had felt before. She actually welcomed the pain because she knew it meant she was that much closer to walking again.
“Okay, what do you want to ask?” Dr. Patterson asked as she pulled off her gloves.
“First, how long? I mean, when will I be able to run again?”
“I can’t give you an exact timetable. Part of your recovery will be based purely on your body’s ability to heal. The other major factor is the effort and energy you are willing to put into your rehabilitation.”
“But I can get back to where I was?”
“Not right away, but you should certainly regain full mobility. In any case, you will have a full and satisfying life.”
“What about soccer?”
“I don’t know. I can’t realistically speak about that this early in your recovery. That being said, I don’t expect you to have a permanent disability, but it could possibly take a year or longer before you can be competitive physically.”
Lily was floored. When she had awakened and could not move, she had tried to accept that she might not walk again. Once the tests had revealed she would get better, she never figured her recovery would take so much time.
“Really?” she asked. “A year or two? That seems awfully long.”
“Don’t kid yourself. You’re incredibly lucky. Not only did you survive a terrible accident, you also had good fortune in the way the building fell down around you. Heck, you could have been squashed like a bug. Instead, you’ll be able to dance at your daughter’s wedding.”
“My daughter?”
“That cute little redhead who was in here the other day taking such good care of you.”
“Oh, that was just the daughter of friend.”
The doctor patted her on the arm. “Right,” she said with a wink. “Friends.”
Lily blushed, and did not understand why she reacted that way. Gail was just her co-worker, nothing else. They had just started to become friends. It did not mean
