Next to him on the plane, Brian nudged his arm and took a swig from the beer he’d been nursing since dinner. “You’re welcome, by the way.”

“For?” Luca asked, motioning to his favorite flight attendant for another glass of wine because, why not?

“Redirecting the attention away from you and Mia and everything else. It was definitely a gamble, but it sure paid off in the end. In spades. Man, can she drive.”

“That she can. I take it you’d never seen her in action before.” Luca took a sip. “She’s, ah, something else.”

“Look, I’m saying this as a friend, not your manager.” Brian lowered his voice. “I don’t know exactly what’s on your mind, but considering that you’re suddenly acting like a moody teenage boy with a crush on his teacher, I think I have a pretty good idea. The two of you? Don’t. Between Rob dying, which I still don’t think any of us has fully grasped, her especially, her new role with the team, and leaving her life in Chicago behind without expecting to, she has too many cars on the track right now without—”

Luca looked around to find headphones in the ears of the staff members within listening range. “Me taking her for a ride? I understand what you’re saying. I do. Trust me, I have no intention of leaving the friend lane.” This may be the most personal conversation he’d ever had with another guy. “But being around her has stirred up ... things.”

“Do I want to ask about these things?” Brian suddenly looked as uncomfortable as Luca felt.

Luca shrugged. “Things I perhaps moved past more quickly than she did. Or maybe never dealt with at all. I don’t know. It’s hard to believe now that Rob told me to forget about her, and I did. I didn’t think twice about it.”

“You were a kid,” Brian said. “And that was a lot of shit to hit the fan. I mean, a lot.”

“Maybe he was testing me. To see how I felt about her?”

Brian shook his head. “Absolutely not. First of all, that wasn’t Rob’s MO. He said what he wanted to say. Second, he caught you having sex with his daughter. In that moment at least, he wanted you gone. Maybe dead. Can you blame him?”

“Not at all,” Luca said. “I guess the real mystery, then, is why he wanted me back.”

“That I can’t tell you. Like I said before, he only shared that you and Mia had been involved, but it was all in the past.”

“And that’s where it needs to stay,” Luca said, trying to convince himself as much as Brian. “Also, yes, I do need to thank you. It seemed like a harebrained idea at the time, but I don’t think Mia could’ve taken another couple of days of muck being dredged up.”

The negative headlines had started to fade once the press caught sight of her masterful driving. The process had sped up when Jordan failed to best her at what he considered his own game.
