Where did the days go?

If I had to guess, I’d say it went by in a flurry of fun, daytime activities with Madelyn, and sexy nighttime activities with Beck. It’s honestly been the best week of my life, and while I’m excited to go on the wine cruise tonight, I don’t want to go, because that means Kennedy and Matt will soon be home, and I’ll be on my way back to Cape Breton Island.

My mother has been calling nonstop, telling me how swamped they are now that college is out and summer travel has begun. At one point, I almost suggested hiring on more staff, but kept my mouth shut. Tourism is a hard business; I know that firsthand. I just wish the lion’s share of the responsibility didn’t fall on my shoulders because Mom and Dad hate working together, and I know the resort, and every department within it, inside out.

“Are you okay?” Beck asks, as he comes into his bedroom, and steps up to me. His arms go around my body, and I meet his gaze in the mirror.

I set my brush down. There’s no denying that we’ve grown closer over the last week, and he’s been honest with me, so I say, “Just thinking about the resort.” He nods, and goes quiet. “Say it,” I push.

He takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly, hugging me a little bit tighter. “Babe, you already know what I’m going to say.”

It’s crazy how much I like it when he calls me babe. I turn to face him. His arms stay around me, holding me to him. I absorb his warmth and strength as I put my hand on his chest and count the beats of his strong heart. “It’s complicated.”

“I know.”

I blink up at him. “I owe them.”

“I know that, too.”

I glance at his chest and toy with the button on his shirt, loving the way it hugs his torso and arms. Of course, I also love him in his work coveralls. I took Madelyn to visit him at the service station, and she loved it. No doubt because Ross keeps treats behind the counter. I have to say it’s been nice playing house, and it’s really started me thinking more about my future. In fact, the more time I spend with Beck, the less accepting I am of following the path that’s been laid out for me since birth.

“I don’t want to spend the rest of my life working the resort,” I blurt out, not telling him something he doesn’t already know. “I want to travel, see new things, and someday, open my own clothing store.” There’s more that I want but that’s all I say for now, as I lift my head to see him, not at all surprised at the adoration in his eyes. This man believes in me, believes with all the confidence in his body that I can achieve all those things if I put my mind to it. “I mean, my business degree wouldn’t be going to waste.
