Chapter 14

I screamed for the werewolves, but those cries fell on deaf ears in the dark shadows of the surrounding forest. “Please, Drake,” I begged. “Don’t kill me.”

“I didn’t plan to,” he said, “but you have not been very…cooperative. I had to force you out here, and that just pisses me off.”

“I was scared,” I whispered, staring into those glowing, cold eyes of a monster.

When he morphed into his human form, my shoulders drooped in relief. I hoped I could bargain with him, beg him for my life, find some way to escape his ancient, fatal grasp. He shoved me forward, and my brows knitted together as I looked around for Julie, only to spot her standing by the driveway with a worried expression on her face.

“Is my mom okay?” she asked.

“She’s just sleeping,” I answered, trying to maintain my composure. “She’ll be fine.”

Before Julie could say another word, Jonathon grabbed her arm and pulled her toward the street.

Drake wrapped his fingers around my wrist and pulled me away. “You’re coming with me. As for those wolves, you’re lucky they haven’t caught on. If they do, I will slash Julie’s neck, then yours, and then I’ll kill every single one of those wolves, wipe out the entire pack.”

His strength was amazing, and he pulled me across the yard and down the street to a waiting black car. My heart had never raced so fast. For all I knew, it was nothing but an elaborate hoax to scare us little timid mice out of our hole. I worried that he might be taking us back to the altar. It was hard enough to think Julie and I were going to die, but the thought of Drake and Jonathon returning to kill our families and Jesse’s in a murder spree was more than I could handle.

Jesse had tried to warn us at the party about how dangerous they were, and I suddenly felt like a fool for hanging out with them, laughing, and doing shots. They had hidden their true colors well, but Jesse knew them for who they really were. That was why he’d sneaked us out of the party as soon as he had the opportunity.

Jonathon shoved me in the back seat, then pushed Julie roughly inside. He got in next to Julie and slammed the door shut.

“Drive,” Drake commanded as he opened the door on my side and slipped in. The vampires sat beside both car doors, and us in the middle. Guess there was no way we could jump out. The car sped down the road, and I risked shooting Julie a look. She was petrified, holding my hand in a white-knuckled death grip. Her eyes were wide and mirrored my own fears. We had no idea where we were going or what was going to happen to us. And I just hoped we weren’t being led to be sacrificed in some awful ceremony.

“I’m so sorry,” Julie said to me. “I just…I couldn’t let my mom die like that.
