Chapter Sixteen

~ Joanna ~

“Well, that’s the end of our time. Do you have any final words?” I said to my current clients, the Rossi family.

“Just that I will be here for her and the children as long as I can.” Mr. Tony Rossi said. I translated for him.

“I will miss you forever, Tony.” Mrs. Sheryl Rossi said as she rocked the baby in her lap. “I’ll make sure that the children don’t forget you, and especially that little Stewie here knows about you.”

I handed her a tissue. She smiled as she wiped a tear and then stood putting the baby into his car seat and gathered the toddlers’ toys. The oldest was about five and she started to whine a bit.

“Sunny, that’s enough. It’s time for us to go.” Sheryl said firmly. “Thank Ms. Joanna for her time.”

“Thank you, Ms. Joanna.” Sunny said.

“You’re welcome.”

“Tank you.” The middle son, Gavin said.

“Aw, and you are welcome too.” I smiled at him and then to Sheryl. “Your children are so well-behaved.”

“Thank you. They have been through a lot. Spent a lot of time sitting by their father’s bedside.” Her voice caught as she spoke. “I really appreciate you doing this. It has given me some peace.”

“It’s my pleasure.”

“Well, Mrs. Rossi, again, it was my pleasure.” I turned towards the detectives. “Gentleman, would you follow me?”

They stood and followed me as I held the door open between the reception and the back offices. I held a tight smile as Clint passed me. I wanted so badly to reach out and touch him, but of course, I didn’t.

“How’s Oakley doing?” Terry asked as we walked towards my office. “I bet she’s getting big.”

“Oh, she is. I can barely keep up with her.” I laughed.

“Aw, they grow so quickly.”

“Yes, they do. .Speaking of, how’s your crew doing?”

“Keeping us running. They all have their activities and interests. Whitney’s amazing at keeping us all going in the right direction.”

“I hope to be like her when I grow up, you know, as a mom.”

I had only met her once, but she was a wonderful lady. She loved her family and seemed to have it all together.

Terry gave a slight chuckle at my joke. I caught Clint’s eye roll.

We reached the door of my office, I wanted to stall a bit further.

“Would either of you like coffee or water?”

“None for me. Thanks.” Terry smiled.

“No. Thank you.” Clint mumbled.

“Well, if you would allow me a moment to get some water for myself?”

They nodded, so I gestured for them to head into my office while I headed to the break room to grab myself a drink and steady my nerves.

“Why does he unnerve me like this?” I muttered as I slowly walked away.

But honestly was it him or the potential news he brought? We were
