The settee in front of our fireplace was a temporary fix.

FIND YOUR SEAN

If you own your home and no one in your family has much experience doing house repairs—tiling, hanging chandeliers, changing fixtures, knocking down walls, and such—it’s definitely worth it to find your Sean.

When we moved out to our fixer-upper, we hired someone we had never used before to do the work in the kitchen. He had decent references. It was fine, and I’m happy with the work. But behind the scenes, the communication was kind of nonexistent. Once the first project was done, I knew we’d probably never use this fella again.

Then we found Sean.

We first hired Sean for a project because my parents praised the work he did in their home. Always ask around. This is the best way to find someone you trust to do good work in your house. Sean understood our vision, was a pleasure to work with, gave fair estimates, communicated well, and always did what he said he’d do. After Sean finished that first project for us, we knew we wanted his hands on every renovation project we tackled. I think of Sean as my house’s doctor. Sometimes he comes over to check up on what we are doing; sometimes we just need advice; sometimes he does entire projects for us from start to finish. After four years, he knows our house better than we do.

When you hire someone to do work in your home, there are times they get in and out in a few hours. Depending on the project, they might be there day in and day out for weeks. They see you at your worst, they see your home at its worst, and you have to come and go while they are working. Ideally, you want someone you can trust with everything you have who also does great work. That’s a Sean.

There are more Seans out there, and you usually have to deal with a few non-Seans before you find one, but it’s worth it to keep looking. Once you find a Sean, treat him (or her!) right and he’ll stick with you forever. When we lived in our last town, our Sean’s name was Randy. Randy worked alone and a little slower than others (remember, there are trade-offs), but the quality of his work and his trustworthiness made the slower pace more than worth it. If you know you are going to need work done in your house off and on in the future, make it a priority to find your own Sean. If you ask around enough, you’ll find him, and if you’re lucky, he’ll also become a close friend.
