CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“YOU’RE GOING OUT of town again?”

“Yes,” Elsie said, feeling annoyed for some reason by Alaina and her questioning. It was a natural thing to ask. She would be asking Alaina the same question if Alaina was going somewhere. And she would probably want details. But Elsie was not going to give details.

“So, what happened with Travis?”

She stiffened. “Nothing,” she said.

“Nothing?”

“No,” she said. “It’s fine. I’m good with that. I—I mean... There’s always next time.”

“That’s true,” Alaina said. “I mean, maybe you have the right perspective. There’s no point being upset because it didn’t pan out once. He’s a guy. He’s likely to come around eventually.”

“Maybe when the pond dries up,” Elsie said dryly.

Alaina gaped at her. “I didn’t mean that.”

She knew that Alaina hadn’t meant that, and she didn’t know why she was being mean.

You do. You don’t like that she likes Hunter. Because now you like Hunter.

Well, maybe, but she hadn’t planned it. It had all sort of run together. From the flirting lessons to this thing that wasn’t anything other than... It was physical.

She just hadn’t understood how powerful physical could be.

Not until the kiss.

Not until he’d touched her and taken her to places she’d never imagined before.

Even now it made her shiver.

Even now it made her want more.

It was complicated, of course. Because he was Hunter. Because apart from whatever this was, they’d always had...feelings for each other of a kind. They were like family in some ways. Obviously a pretty poor analogy right at the moment, but they were entwined in each other’s lives. So that added an edge.

She wasn’t made of stone, and anyway, Hunter was her...her friend, sort of. So, it was only natural that she would feel something for him given what had happened. What was going to happen.

And she didn’t owe Alaina an explanation for anything, because Alaina and him... She wasn’t in a relationship with him. And she wasn’t going to be.

Something inside of Elsie hardened. Went small and mean and fierce. And she couldn’t quite say what or why. Jealousy. Petty jealousy.

“Anyway,” Elsie said, “Hunter and I are going back to Vancouver.”

She had a chance. To be honest. To say that there was something going on between her and Hunter. To let Alaina know now, so that she wouldn’t be hurt. So that Elsie wouldn’t be lying to her. By omission if nothing else.

Except, what was really happening with her and Hunter? It didn’t need to be Alaina’s business. It wouldn’t go on for very long. It couldn’t. There was no way. So there was no point being... Well, there was no point being weird about it.

She could let things go on as they were.

“You have been spending a lot of time with him,” Alaina said, her eyes suddenly getting sharp.

“I always spend a lot of time with him,” Elsie said. “He’s basically a fixture at my brother’s house.”

“True,” she said. “Did I tell you that my dad called me?”

Elsie frowned. “No.”

“Yeah, it was to wish me happy birthday.”

“Your birthday was over a month ago,” Elsie said, frowning.
