CHAPTER FOURTEEN
âYOUâRE GOING OUT of town again?â
âYes,â Elsie said, feeling annoyed for some reason by Alaina and her questioning. It was a natural thing to ask. She would be asking Alaina the same question if Alaina was going somewhere. And she would probably want details. But Elsie was not going to give details.
âSo, what happened with Travis?â
She stiffened. âNothing,â she said.
âNothing?â
âNo,â she said. âItâs fine. Iâm good with that. IâI mean... Thereâs always next time.â
âThatâs true,â Alaina said. âI mean, maybe you have the right perspective. Thereâs no point being upset because it didnât pan out once. Heâs a guy. Heâs likely to come around eventually.â
âMaybe when the pond dries up,â Elsie said dryly.
Alaina gaped at her. âI didnât mean that.â
She knew that Alaina hadnât meant that, and she didnât know why she was being mean.
You do. You donât like that she likes Hunter. Because now you like Hunter.
Well, maybe, but she hadnât planned it. It had all sort of run together. From the flirting lessons to this thing that wasnât anything other than... It was physical.
She just hadnât understood how powerful physical could be.
Not until the kiss.
Not until heâd touched her and taken her to places sheâd never imagined before.
Even now it made her shiver.
Even now it made her want more.
It was complicated, of course. Because he was Hunter. Because apart from whatever this was, theyâd always had...feelings for each other of a kind. They were like family in some ways. Obviously a pretty poor analogy right at the moment, but they were entwined in each otherâs lives. So that added an edge.
She wasnât made of stone, and anyway, Hunter was her...her friend, sort of. So, it was only natural that she would feel something for him given what had happened. What was going to happen.
And she didnât owe Alaina an explanation for anything, because Alaina and him... She wasnât in a relationship with him. And she wasnât going to be.
Something inside of Elsie hardened. Went small and mean and fierce. And she couldnât quite say what or why. Jealousy. Petty jealousy.
âAnyway,â Elsie said, âHunter and I are going back to Vancouver.â
She had a chance. To be honest. To say that there was something going on between her and Hunter. To let Alaina know now, so that she wouldnât be hurt. So that Elsie wouldnât be lying to her. By omission if nothing else.
Except, what was really happening with her and Hunter? It didnât need to be Alainaâs business. It wouldnât go on for very long. It couldnât. There was no way. So there was no point being... Well, there was no point being weird about it.
She could let things go on as they were.
âYou have been spending a lot of time with him,â Alaina said, her eyes suddenly getting sharp.
âI always spend a lot of time with him,â Elsie said. âHeâs basically a fixture at my brotherâs house.â
âTrue,â she said. âDid I tell you that my dad called me?â
Elsie frowned. âNo.â
âYeah, it was to wish me happy birthday.â
âYour birthday was over a month ago,â Elsie said, frowning.
