CHAPTER SEVEN

On Sunday evening, Cade walked out of his house and headed toward the barn. He didn’t know what to do with himself, especially since he’d already checked cattle, finished the evening chores, and eaten all the cold leftovers in the fridge for supper.

Most Sunday nights like this, he’d be stretched out on the sofa, watching a football game. But he just couldn’t seem to focus. It had been a little more than twenty-four hours since he and Chloe had parted ways at the café. If he didn’t know better, he’d think he was missing her.

An owl hooted in the distance as he approached the barn fence. The air was cool, but his denim jacket kept him warm enough not to notice. After checking a recent repair in the fence, he leaned against a post and admired the beautiful painted sky as the sun set low in the west.

He imagined his great-great-great-grandfather doing the same when he’d settled on this land back in the late 1800s. Generations of Holden men and women had watched the sun rise and set on Elk Creek Ranch, year after year, including his own father. That was part of the legacy that Cade wanted to share with his future wife and children. And why it was so important for him to get it right.

Still, he wasn’t the kind of man to walk away from someone who needed help. And despite her strong protests, he believed Chloe needed lots of help to resolve this mess with Gino. He’d almost confided the truth to Nick yesterday at the Wildcat Tavern. Nick worked as a detective on the Pine City police force and might be able to offer Chloe some advice.

But how could he convince her that she needed his help? His desire to see her again was more than just physical attraction. She obviously didn’t realize the trouble she could be in for concealing a criminal. Protecting her brother was one thing; aiding and abetting was quite another.

His own brothers weren’t much help when he’d talked to them about Chloe. Not that he’d divulged anything about the jewels or criminal activity over beers with them yesterday. They’d beat the tar out of him if they thought he’d gone back to his outlaw ways.

No, he’d just wanted their advice about handling the woman Grandma Hattie had brought into his life. To his surprise, not one of them was sympathetic to his plight. Hank asked why he was so scared of a high-spirited filly like Chloe, and Jack said he’d acted like a darn fool with her at the café. Nick had stayed mostly silent about the subject and just sat there laughing to himself while drinking his beer. Cade thought about calling Sam, his bounty hunter brother, who was down in Galveston with his fiancée but figured he wouldn’t be much help either.

That meant he had to figure this out on his own.

He took off his cowboy hat and raked one hand through his hair. Standing here ruminating wasn’t getting him anywhere.
