Sophia was fighting an inner battle . . . she was hardly a high school virgin but she’d never behaved recklessly when it came to sex. With both of her lovers, she’d taken her time and held back until she was sure it was serious. Now her body was telling her to hell with that. I want him, what’s the big deal—I’m thirty years old. Go for it. The problem with that logic was it didn’t take into account her heart.

She’d never felt this way about anyone in her life. She was practically unhinged with want . . . yet there was more to it than that. She was catching glimpses of what a future with Gunner might look like. Yikes! Just thinking about his lips is making my stomach flip-flop. What is happening to me? I have a half hour to cool down and get it together. Only problem with that was she didn’t want to get it together. Can I have sex with him and let go of any expectations? If not, don’t do it. It’s that simple. Oh God I wish Amelia was still here!

Gunner picked up her hand resting on his thigh and placed it further down his leg. He cleared his throat and said, “Um . . . you know you’re killing me, don’t you?” She glanced up at him and his eyes scorched her face.

She licked her lips and felt bad when he squeezed his eyes shut as if in pain. “I’m sorry, I . . . it’s not intentional. I don’t know what’s going on with me, I’m in uncharted territory with you.”

“It’s chemistry, babe. Pure and simple.”

“Not so simple for me,” she said.

He pressed the car stereo knob, and Thomas Rhett filled the airwaves, dissipating some of the sexual tension. “Good song. Appropriate, don’t ya think?” He grinned.

She had to laugh as she listened to the words to the song Make Me Wanna. “Ha—pull the truck to the side of the road! Let’s! This is definitely our song. Will you sing it for me some time?”

“For you, I’d do just about anything.”

“Winning!” Her laughter filled the truck cab and she realized she hadn’t been this lighthearted in a very long time. He began to sing along and as she listened, she thought it was probably the most swoon-worthy moment of her life. She knew in that instant that her decision was already made. She’d have him tonight.

He parked and killed the engine. His eyes were smoldering, his voice strained when he said, “I’ll walk you to your cabin.”

“Yes,” she replied softly.

They held hands and when they stepped onto the porch, she faced him and slipped her arms around his waist. “Come in.”

“Sophia, I . . . I don’t want there to be any regrets.”

“There won’t be.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“Yes.”

She released him and opened the door. He hauled her into his arms the second the door closed behind them and commandingly kissed her, allowing no time for second guessing. Not that she would have anyway.
