CHAPTER FOUR

Brynn sat up, rubbing her head. “Ouch.”

“Mama, are you okay?” Brooke knelt beside her with concern written all over her little face. She touched Brynn’s shoulder.

“I’m all right,” Brynn said, but her head ached. She should’ve gotten her helmet fixed. She turned to look for the horses. They were nowhere in sight. “Where are the horses?”

“They ran away,” Brooke said solemnly. “The bad man chased them.”

“What? To try and catch them?” Brynn struggled to stand and saw stars. She sank back down.

“No, he ran toward them waving his hands and shouting,” Brooke said.

“What? Are you sure he wasn’t trying to get hold of them?” But Brynn knew Brooke told the truth.

“I’m sure,” she said.

“Why would he run off our horses?” Brooke’s aching head hurt even more thinking of the reasons someone would chase away horses. None of them good.

“I don’t know.” Brooke sounded scared.

“Let’s get out of here.” Although her head swam, Brynn forced herself to her feet. Brooke took her hand.

They had only taken a few steps when the man appeared over the horizon. There was nowhere to run, or to hide. Even if her head hadn’t felt like a jackhammer was going off in it, the tree line was too far to escape to without him seeing every step. She pushed Brooke behind her and lifted her chin when he drew near.

“What do you want from us? Why’d you run off the horses?”

He stopped and glared at her. “I need some security. You and the kid will do nicely. I don’t like horses, never have. I can’t ride, and I can’t keep up with you on foot.”

“What are you talking about? What security?” Brynn’s head pounded. “We’re not helping you. We’re gathering our horses and leaving.” She started to turn away when she spotted the gun he had pointed at her chest.

“Not so fast.”

Brooke sniffled behind her. Brynn reached around and clasped her daughter’s shoulder. “What do you want from us? You realize when three loose horses return to the trailer that someone will see them and come after us, right?”

“Maybe, but by that time I’ll be long gone.”

“Let us go,” Brynn said. “Brooke’s just a little kid. She can’t hike all over these mountains….”

“She’ll do fine,” the guy insisted. “Let’s move.”

“I’m not taking one step until I understand what’s going on,” Brynn declared. “Why do you need us for security? Who are you and what are you running from?”

He lifted the gun until it was even with her face. “Never mind that. I know someone hid some loot from an armored car heist a few years ago. I plan to find it and disappear in Mexico.”

Brynn remembered the incident. They’d talked about it on air at the radio station. Five men had hijacked an armored car, three of them had been killed, but two escaped with the loot. They’d been captured and sent to prison but refused to give up the location of the money.

“You realize by taking us hostage that you’re only slowing yourself down, right?” A hint of desperation crept into Brynn’s voice and she fought to not beg.
