CHAPTER SIX

– LOTTIE –

“Mom, can I wait outside with Oak?” Clover asks with her backpack in hand.

I’m still fussing over things because I’m not sure what to take with me, even if we’re only planning to stay with Oak for a few days.

“Yes, but let Oak know and stay near him. He’s outside waiting by his truck along with Spiro.” The words haven’t even all left my mouth and she’s already rushing out of the house.

I huff and direct my attention at the refrigerator to check if there will be stuff going to waste if we don’t return in a few days. Slamming the door closed I glance around the room. My bag is packed and I’m sure I have everything, but like I said, I’m fussing.

Glancing outside, I see Oak leaning against his truck, his head turned toward Clover who is practicing some dance moves, while Spiro is clearly talking to him. The way his protective gaze never leaves my daughter warms my heart.

I’ve fallen hard and fast for this man, and from everything he says and does, it’s clear he feels the same way. Having a baby as young as I had has given a spin on my life and took away some of the things I might have once dreamed about.

For one a big wedding before having kids, that’s for sure. But life’s too short for regrets and looking back instead of aiming your eyes on what’s right in front of you will only make you run into walls. At least, that’s what my mom used to say.

A smile tugs my lips at the fond memory. I wish she could see me now, and most of all, meet Oak. She would love him just because of the way he is with Clover; always patient, caring, but stern when needed. I know I made the right choice to accept his proposal and I do hope the situation with Anson is handled quickly without any issues so we can move on with our lives together; as a family.

Shit. I have to swing by the store for a pregnancy test. I grab my backpack and throw it over my shoulder. Snatching the suitcase near the door, I walk out and lock up. Oak comes rushing toward me when he sees me coming down the stairs.

Spiro chuckles and shoots me a wink, muttering, “That man is head-over-heels for you,” as he slips past me to enter the bar.

Oak takes the backpack and suitcase from me and stalks back to put them into the truck. Clover is oblivious to her surroundings and is still dancing. I now notice she’s wearing earbuds which are connected to the phone she’s holding in her hand. My attention is drawn away from her when I notice movement from the front of Oak’s truck.

The air freezes inside my lungs when I hear, “Well now, look at you two pretty ladies.”

Clover is still oblivious but Oak is clearly not when he brushes past me and growls, “Fuck off, Anson, there’s nothing here for you.
