“Hello?” Madison said, eyeing me as she hit the speaker button.

“You best be calling Dad, Madison,” JD said. “He’s heard about what you’ve done.”

“I figured this was coming. Thanks for the heads up, JD.”

“Sure, sis. Good luck. Here if you need me.”

“Bye, JD.”

“Bye.”

I took Madison’s hand and pressed my lips to her knuckles.

“Better start packing, I suppose,” she said, squeezing my hand before shifting the sheets and sitting up. “Just one thing to get out of the way first,” Madison added, waving her phone.

“You’re actually calling your father?” I asked, raising a brow and rising from the bed we had spent the whole week in.

“Ken, I have to. My horses are still there. No telling what he’ll do if he doesn’t hear from me soon.”

“I don’t know if that’s a good idea, Madison,” I said, pulling my boxer briefs on.

“Trust me, Ken. I have to do this.”

I nodded and gave her a weak smile. I wasn’t ready for reality to set in or our week of laying low to come to an end. My heart started to pound as I watched her hold the phone to her ear. This wasn’t going to go well.

“Daddy,” Madison whispered into the receiver. Sterling’s voice thundered from the other end. The phone didn’t need to have the speaker on. I could hear his yell loud and clear.

“How dare you not return my calls, Madison? I’ve heard about your little escapade to Las Vegas. You’re a traitor just like your mother!” Sterling spat.

“Daddy, I just –” Madison started in protest.

“Don’t say another word! I have a few things to say, and then I’ll have you know you are dead to me! You and your lover boy best be getting those horses out of my barn and your belongings off my property quickly. When I first got word of this treason, I had half a mind to put a bullet in each one of their heads. Consider their lives and my generosity a wedding gift! You’re dead to me, girl! Y’hear?”

“Yes, Daddy,” Madison answered meekly before hanging up the phone. She looked ill. I could see her throat working, trying to hold back a sob as the tears began to well in her eyes. I rushed to her side and held her.

“Come on. Let’s pack up and go. It’s gonna be OK, Madison. This is the kick-start we needed. I’m so sorry to see you hurt like this, but you’ve wanted to start that business of yours, so let’s go do it. We’ll get your horses out of there. Trust me.”

She nodded, wiped her nose and pulled out the dresser drawers, aimlessly stuffing what little we had picked up on our way to Vegas in a plastic shopping bag.

We left Las Vegas in the direction we had come. We weren’t so sure where home would be once we got back. Madison clutched my hand, but said little during the drive. All we knew is that we had each other, our horses and a business to get off the ground and fast.
