Michelle

I run like hell away from the cellar window, as fast as I can. I don’t think I’ve ever run this fast in my entire life. I can hear shouting and the sounds of fighting behind me. Bruce’s voice rings out. He’s fighting them, but he can’t beat them all.

I’ve reached the tree line of the property and I stop to turn around. I can’t leave him there. I just can’t. But what can I do to help him? I have nothing: no weapons, no transportation. Nothing.

In the end, it doesn’t matter. I decide I have to go back. I have to try.

It’s what he would do for me.

Right before I start running back, I feel a hand on my shoulder and I scream bloody blue murder.

“It’s okay! It’s okay!” I hear a voice say. I whirl around, ready to throw a punch or a kick, until I see the face behind me.

“Wyatt!” I say, realizing it’s Bruce’s brother.

“Hey, Michelle,” he gives me a quick, serious smile. “You both should have reached the chopper by now, and I figured that maybe you’d gotten into some trouble.”

I nod furiously.

“Your brother came in like a hurricane,” I say. “And he saved me from…well, he saved me, and he got me out of there. But we got cornered, he shoved me out a window, and now he’s trapped back there.”

Wyatt produces a gun from his holster.

“Show me where,” he says simply.

We race back across the property, me leading him to the window that Bruce pushed me through. He tells me to run not towards it, but slightly off-center.

“I don’t want those goons down there to spot us too early,” he says.

We reach the wall of the mansion to the left of the cellar window. I can hear sounds of laughter and grunting. They’re beating Bruce. Every punch makes me clench my jaw.

“It’s all right,” Wyatt whispers to me. “Bruce can take it. He used to take worse from me when we were kids.”

He slides over to the window and kicks the glass and pushes himself through.

“What the fuck?” I hear someone say, the words followed by a few rounds of gunfire.

Suddenly, Bruce’s head comes through the window.

“Bruce!” I run over to him, helping pull him through. “Are you alright?”

He nods, sitting on the ground as he catches his breath.

“They didn’t hit my face,” he says. “They didn’t want to knock me out. They wanted me to tell them where you were. But all those body blows…damn. I’m gonna have some bruised ribs, at the very least.”

I take him by the sides of his face.

“Thank you for saving my life.”

I bring my mouth to his, kissing him deeply.

It’s like an electric current shoots through me to him and routes itself backwards into me again. I’ve never felt anything like it. I break the kiss and pull back.

“Wow,” he says, grinning. “I should rescue you more often, Michelle.”

I laugh. “I’m sure we can find other ways to have a good time.”

Wyatt emerges from the window and slides himself from the cellar.
