Danielle was hurrying to practice when her mobile phone buzzed with an incoming text. Madame Volkova was summoning her again. Maybe she wanted to respond to Danielle’s suggestion regarding minor choreography adjustments. She walked in and noticed Maria was there discussing something. Yet when Maria saw her, she left quickly, without even saying good morning or making eye contact. What could that mean?

“You sent for me, Madame?”

“Yes, please take a seat here in front of my desk.”

Danielle did so.

“I’m afraid I have news you won’t be pleased with.”

“Yes, Madame Volkova?”

“Best get it on the table. Danielle, I’ve asked Ekaterina to return from vacation. I need her to play Odette, and I’m moving you to second understudy.”

“What!”

It was a horrific demotion. It was one step above being fired outright; almost worse, because of the humiliation factor.

“Yes, I think you’ll be better suited for that role.”

“Second understudy? Madame Volkova, I don’t understand. Am I not performing as you wish? Is there some flaw in my dancing, technical or artistic? Have I offended you somehow?”

“I know it’s a disappointment, Danielle. And it’s not my favorite part of this job to deliver such news. But please reverse rolls with Alena at practice today, and when Ekaterina arrives tomorrow, she’ll resume her position. As you know, we are only days out from our season opening.”

Danielle had to remember why she was in Russia in the first place. It wasn’t about her dream of dancing at the Mariinsky. It was to uncover the plot against Markov. If she angered Volkova further, or was insubordinate, she could easily be fired for cause. It was no time for a scene.

Danielle forced down her anger and bewilderment and tried to keep her voice under control.

“Yes, Madame.”

“Thank you, Danielle, that will be all. I’ve much work to attend to.”
