Chapter 18

Brandon

Cat and I drive to Briarly the night before we leave for Australia. I promised Talia a trip to Disneyland for Christmas in order to get her blessing to be away for six days. Our trip isn’t planned for long because I refuse to be away from Talia for an extended period. Cat and I are meeting in the lounge before we head back to my place. She is sleeping at my house because it’s convenient. We leave for the airport at six. Cat insists she stay in one of the guestrooms. She doesn’t want Talia to become confused.

“Are you ready to roll?” I say to Cat as I lean in to kiss her on the lips.

“I am. Australia here we come,” Cat says.

I whisper in her ear when I see Trish enter the lounge. “Here comes the dragon lady. Time to play the engaged woman.”

Trish takes the chair next to Cat. “Mind if I sit here?”

“Have this seat too if you want. Brandon and I were just leaving. We’re taking off for Australia in the morning. Call it an early honeymoon if you will,” Cat says as she places her hand on the bar. Her sparkling diamond is impossible to miss.

“This is the first I’ve seen you since Brandon gave me the news. We keep missing each other I guess. Tell me, what’s my daughter doing while the two of you globetrot?” Trish asks.

I answer the question. “Her Aunt Max is staying over and she’s very excited about that. We considered taking her with us, but she prefers to stay in Albany. She loves school and doesn’t want to miss it.”

“I’ve decided to go back to France but don’t celebrate yet. Before I go I’d like the four of us to have dinner together. I’ll be here for another month so there’s no rush. As Talia’s mother, I think I’m owed at least one visit. I want to see how she is around the two of you as a soon-to-be-married couple.”

“Not a problem Trish. We’ll see you before then and set something up,” I say, although I have no idea how it will work.

Cat and I drive home. We’re thrilled that Trish is leaving but haven’t a clue how to avoid her meeting with Talia.

“I’m not going to let it ruin Australia,” I say and grasp Cat’s hand. “Are you okay?”

“I don’t know, Brandon, I just don’t know,” she says.

Having taken my plane to Australia twice before, the pilot, Otis, knows the most convenient spots to refuel.

“I can’t believe we have this extra-long flight ahead of us and I forgot the book I’ve been reading,” Cat says two hours into our journey.

“Not to worry. I have plenty of reading material,” I say.

“I have a feeling our tastes differ in that regard,” she says.

“What kinds of books do you think I read?”

“Biographies of rich, successful, white men and finance-related books. Tell me I’m wrong?” Cat asks.

“You’re not wrong in that I do read those books because they interest me but I read books on a wide variety of topics.
