Chapter 5

When the morning sun warmed her face, Juliet stirred. She grimaced a little at the discomfort she felt, only for her lips to then curve at the memory of how she’d become sore. She didn’t have to reach around to know Walker wasn’t in bed with her.

Just as at some point last night she’d awoken and knew he was gone. Before she could go in search of him he’d returned, his hand cupping and squeezing her breast. She’d turned to him, questions about his absence forgotten in the strong desire he so effortlessly awakened in her.

While it wasn’t like her to have fallen into bed with someone after so short a time, she wasn’t going to question her behavior. Nor was she going to make the mistake of believing last night was the start to a fairy-tale romance. What she and Walker had done last night was enjoy one another. Period.

If only her heart didn’t stumble a little over that belief.

After showering and dressing she went downstairs. While she enjoyed a fortifying mug of tea, she watched Walker work with the horses. He moved with the same fluid power as he’d done last night while thrusting inside her, at turns gentle or forceful. She actually shivered when he paused and ran a hand up and down the leg of one of the horses. Desire tightened her belly, but she turned away and went into her studio. She had a deadline and while the sexy man tempted her to go outside and drag him upstairs or into the barn, she wouldn’t let him distract her from completing the narration.

Hours later, she finally felt satisfied with the production. She’d enjoyed the twists and turns of the book and had to admit the storybook happy ending suited her frame of mind perfectly. Next up on her work schedule was narration for a nature film. Since that involved a different mindset from the project she’d just completed, she took a break.

Stepping outside she paused and once again marveled at the changes in her life. Maybe she’d come to Montana to escape a threat, but at the moment she had no regret for having made the move. The sky overhead showed blue with dots of white clouds rather than the spears of skyscrapers. And a hawk, she realized as she gazed up. The spring air brushing against her skin was cool and clean instead of clogged with scents of gas, sidewalk vendors and the crush of humanity rushing on every street.

Yes, she missed her friends and family. She would have no matter where she moved. At least here she had a serenity she hadn’t realized she needed. Here she felt she could find the kind of life she’d always hoped to enjoy.

Walker stepped out of the dark interior of the barn, coming to a stop when he noticed her on the back porch. This was something, someone, else she needed. Not simply a physical need, although, God that was beyond anything she’d ever experienced. She wanted him, wanted to know his secrets, wanted to share his dreams.
